The video is about global warming and its effects on the environment if left unchecked.
In 2015, world leaders gathered in Paris, France to make a deal to ensure that global temperature
will not exceed 2℃, and to try and keep it below 1.5℃. This is because if the Earth’s average
temperature rises to 1.5℃, it will cause great environmental damage, as rainforests, polar bear
habitats and coral reef areas shrink, sea level rises, threatening cities with low elevation but still
safe enough for people to live in, agriculture struggles due to droughts and floods, … Living
conditions in certain places would be hard, but survivable, if we cut down on greenhouse gases
now and maintain carbon-neutral by mid-century. It’s doable, but it will be hard, as companies
based on fossil fuels have great influence, certain leaders deny the existance of the problem and
changing the world’s energy system takes a lot of time and money. However, if we let it go past
even 0.5℃, it can be disastrous. Gone were rainforests, ice caps, polar bears and coral reefs,
heatwaves are becoming more deadly and widespread, major coastal cities flooded, making
millions of people homeless and there won’t be enough food and water for everyone, especially
third world countries. There is still time to turn this around, but the clock is ticking, and the line
between a disturbing posibility and a terrifying reality is just half a degree.

This video is about why people get distracted while working, and how to focus on the job
at hand. From the speaker’s experience, getting rid of external factors like phones or social
media is not enough to avoid distractions, as it is the internal factors, the uncomfortable feelings
like bordom, loneliness, uncertainty, …, that is the main problem. To overcome this, there are
five tips that can help. The first one is to plan out your day, but not with a to-do list. The best
way to do this isn’t to write out what you want to do every day, but how much time you need to
devote yourself to do them. Second, you should designate a time slot for checking e-mails and
social media, so you don’t do it when you feel bored or lonely and take too long to refocus back
to the task. Another tip is to “surf the urge”, meaning to notice and be mindful of what they’re
feeling when the “urge” to distract yourself, thereby “surfing” over the feeling until it passes.
Moreover, you need to beware to the period of time when you’re switching from one task to
another, or “liminal moments”, as if you prolong the thing you’re doing during those times, like
checking your e-mail, to when you’re starting your work, it turns into a form of distraction. The
last thing you can do is to know that you have the power to stop yourself from getting distracted.
Instead of thinking “this thing is taking control of my time” or “this is too addicting for me to
ignore”, think “I can put this aside for now and focus on my work”.
