PROJECT ENGINEER: Duties and Responsibilities

The class lecture previously talked about the duties and responsibilities of a DPWH Field
Engineers or Project Engineers. It was in a brief time period but comprised of substantial load of
general knowledge regarding practical engineering which makes the discussion interestingly open
and hanging.
First and foremost, project engineers are not just engineers by profession, but it is seemed
like they are an insanely responsible individuals capable of leading a team by being a firm leader
unto themselves. Project engineers work loads may vary depending on public or private institution
they are in, but their common denominator is the experience they gain in the field. These
professionals are tasked to carry out a job, beating deadlines and client’s expectations. They
oversee overall planning of the project, the ins and outs of each construction processes
detrimental in attaining milestones. They are also responsible carrying out the procurement of
materials, assessing and testing the delivered set of stuffs needed for the project in that particular
time frame. One also has the position to decline, accept, and even intercept a said substitute. The
authorized rejection of materials and goods is also under his/her capability. It is indeed important
to sort out each item in order to avoid bigger losses and inconveniences. These circumstances are
noted in the project engineers’ line of sight. Each big construction phases are subjected to project
engineers’ approval. They might not be at the field overseeing the projects pace and condition, in
a daily manner, however it is important to know that their presence is needed in each milestone
and emergencies requiring big decisions to overcome. In line with significant construction pace,
project engineers should ensure that inspections and tests are carried out properly, this is one of
their main tasks responsible for the sake of the project’s condition and the staffs’ around the rising
infrastructure. These inspections are significant for the team not to compromise any part of the
said contract, preventing injuries for the clients, and even further breach which may turn into
liquidated damages, if not held properly. Also, for the sake of the staff, these proper management
of project engineers are to ensure a progressive and minimized amount of work. These inspections
would be in turn in forms of authorized documentations such as monthly statement of work
accomplished, financial status, prospects, and office announcements and reports.
These work loads might be a bit overwhelming for a civil engineering student pursuing in
construction, but these are absolutely fulfilling, even just imagining it from here. Each project
would have its own failures and successes, but a good team would always make it work in each
“turning over”.
