2 Product description

2.1 Product description

Description

With KUKA.Sim you can simulate your system concepts and program KU-
KA robots offline. The product enables easy robot programming, the gen-
eration of KRL robot programs and exact cycle time analyses (from KSS
8.5).

2.2 Component library

The KUKA.Sim component library is a local database that contains over


1,000 typical layout components (robots, grippers, fences, etc.) for KU-
KA.Sim.
The initial transfer and continuous updating of the local KUKA components
(e.g. new robot types) are carried out automatically as soon as the com-
puter is connected to the Internet.

2.3 Intended use and misuse

Use

The KUKA.Sim software is used for creating 3D layouts with KUKA robots
and also for the offline programming of KUKA robots.

Misuse

Any use or application deviating from the intended use is deemed to be


misuse and is not allowed. It will result in the loss of warranty and liability
claims. KUKA is not liable for any damage resulting from such misuse.

Installation
3 Installation

3.1 System requirements

Hardware

At least:
• Processor: Intel i5 3xxx processor or equivalent
• Memory: 8 GB
• Hard drive: 3 GB available space
• Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 4400 (integrated) or equivalent
• Graphics resolution: 1280 x 1024
• Mouse: 3 buttons (left, middle, right)
Recommended:
• Processor: Intel i7 8xxx processor or equivalent
• Memory: 8 GB or more
• Hard drive: 3 GB available space
• Graphics card: Nvidia GPU with at least 4 GB of dedicated memory,
e.g. GeForce GTX 1080 or better
• Graphics resolution: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) or higher
• Mouse: 3 buttons (left, middle, right)

Software

• 64-bit operating system: Windows 10

Additional

Internet access and an e-mail address are required for activation of the
product. Internet access is also required for downloading the component
library.
Installation in virtual environments or on virtual desktops is not possible.

3.2 Standard installation

Precondition

• Local administrator rights

Procedure

1. Start the setup file KUKA.Sim 4.0.x Setup.exe. The installation win-
dow opens. To continue the installation, click on Next.
2. A license agreement is displayed. In order to be able to install KU-
KA.Sim, the agreement must be accepted. Then click on Next.
3. Read the data protection policy.
Then click on Next.
4. Select the directory in which KUKA.Sim is to be saved.
If no directory is selected, KUKA.Sim is saved under C:\Program
Files\KUKA\KUKA Sim 4.0.
Then click on Next.
5. If the software is being installed on the system for the first time: An-
swer Yes when asked whether you would like to associate the VCM
file extension with this software version.

6. If the software is being installed on the system for the first time: An-
swer Yes when asked whether you would like to associate the VCMX
file extension with this software version.
7. Select Finish to complete the installation.

3.3 Standard uninstallation

Precondition

• Local administrator rights


• WorkVisual is closed.

WorkVisual must be closed during the uninstallation of KUKA.Sim. If


not, files may be retained despite uninstallation and a new installation
will be blocked.

Procedure

1. In the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel > Programs > Pro-
grams and Features. The list of installed programs is displayed.
2. Select the corresponding version of KUKA.Sim. Click on Uninstall and
answer the request for confirmation with Yes.
3. To continue the process, click on Next.
During the uninstallation of a single PC license, the license key for
KUKA.Sim installation is automatically deactivated on the activation
server. After completion of the uninstallation, the license key is then
available for reinstallation on another PC and can be activated there.
4. Activate the check box for “Deactivate the license key” to enable the
transfer of the single PC license to another PC. Then click on Next to
deactivate the license key.
5. Select Finish to complete the uninstallation.

3.4 Installation/uninstallation via the command window

Description

Various modes for installation and uninstallation are available via the com-
mand window. Further information can be found in the setup help. The
procedure for displaying it is described below.

Installation
Silent mode/license

Starting the installation in Silent mode constitutes unconditional accept-


ance of the license agreement.
If uninstallation is carried out in Silent mode, the license is deactivated.

Precondition

• Local administrator rights


• The Setup.exe for KUKA.Sim is located in a directory that can be ac-
cessed by the computer. This also apples to uninstallation!
• Only for uninstallation: WorkVisual is closed.

WorkVisual must be closed during the uninstallation of KUKA.Sim. If


not, files may be retained despite uninstallation and a new installation
will be blocked.

Procedure

1. Open the command window.


2. Drag Setup.exe for KUKA.Sim into the command window.
3. Optional:
a. Display setup help with “-h” + ENTER. (Alternatively: “-?” + EN-
TER)

It may take a moment before the help is displayed.


b. Drag Setup.exe into the command window again.
4. Enter the desired action. Confirm with ENTER.

5. Only for uninstallation: Activate the check box for “Deactivate the li-
cense key” if the single PC license is subsequently to be transferred
to another PC.
Installation: KUKA.Sim is saved under C:\Program Files\KUKA\KUKA Sim
4.0.
Uninstallation: The files in C:\Program Files\KUKA\KUKA Sim 4.0 are de-
leted.

Licensing
4 Licensing

4.1 License key

The license information for KUKA.Sim can be found on the KUKA deliv-
ery note.

4.2 License types

• Stand-alone license:
The license is on the PC on which KUKA.Sim is used. The license
key is then valid for this computer only. It can also be transferred to a
different computer.
• Network license:
The license is assigned by a license server.
A license server must be set up which can be accessed across the
network by the computer on which KUKA.Sim is installed.
• Test license
The license can be requested via the my.KUKA portal and is free of
charge. This license can be used to test KUKA.Sim for a limited peri-
od.

4.2.1 Stand-alone license

Description

The license is on the PC on which KUKA.Sim is used. It is then valid for


this computer only. It can also be transferred to a different computer. For
a speedy transfer, Internet access is required.

4.2.1.1 Activating KUKA.Sim on a computer with an Internet connection

Description

Activation of KUKA.Sim is carried out on the computer (PC) following in-


stallation and is only possible with a license key.

Precondition

• KUKA.Sim is installed.
• A license key is available.

Procedure

1. Start KUKA.Sim. The window for activating the license opens automat-
ically, provided KUKA.Sim is not licensed. Click on Next to continue
the activation.
2. Select the license type “Standalone product key”. Then click on Next.
3. Enter the license key in the Product key box. Then click on Next.

4. Enter your e-mail address and password on the left-hand side and
click on Login to carry out the registration.
If you do not have an e-mail address and password:
Fill in the fields on the right-hand side, using any password, and click
on Register. The password is assigned here.
If registration is to be carried out at a later time, click on Skip.

5. Click on Finish to complete the licensing.
Information about the details of the license can be found under Info >
License Details.

4.2.1.2 Activating KUKA.Sim on a computer without an Internet connection

Description

A license activation file (Activation Request File) for a single PC license is


used if KUKA.Sim is installed on a PC which has no Internet connection.
KUKA.Sim is activated manually via the license portal page.

Procedure

1. Install KUKA.Sim on the desired computer if this has not already been
done.

2. Start KUKA.Sim.
The following window appears if there is no Internet connection:

3. Click on Generate.
A license activation file is generated.
4. Save the license activation file on a mobile data storage medium, e.g.
a USB stick.

5. Call up the website “https://license.visualcomponents.net/KUKA” on a


computer with Internet access.
6. Connect the data storage medium with the license activation file to the
computer with Internet access.
7. Log in with e-mail address and password, or perform registration first.

9. Browse for the license activation file and select Upload file.

10. Select Confirm. The license file (dat file) is created.

14. Click on Activate to activate KUKA.Sim.

4.2.2 Network license

Network licenses provide a flexible way of using KUKA.Sim on more than


one PC. As long as a license remains requested by a PC, this license is
allocated to this PC. When KUKA.Sim is closed, the license becomes
available again and can be accessed by another PC.
A license server is required to manage the network licenses.

Precondition

The license server can be installed on any available network PC running


Windows 10. It is recommended that installation is performed with admin-
istrator privileges. “Microsoft Management Console” (MMC) should be in-
stalled on the license server. The software can be downloaded from the
Microsoft website.

4.2.2.1 Installing the license server


Licensing

Description

The following illustrations show the installation procedure for the license
server. Follow the installation instructions.

Procedure

1. Start the installation wizard by clicking on “SetupVCLicenseServ-


er.exe”. The installation window opens. To continue the installation,
click on Next.

2. A license agreement is displayed. In order to be able to install the li-


cense server, the agreement must be accepted. Then click on Next.

3. Select the directory in which the license server is to be saved. The li-
cense server is installed by default under “C:\Programme\VisualCom-
ponents\VisualComponentsLicenseServer”. If the installation path is
changed, the memory requirement must be checked.
Then click on Next.

4. Select or create a folder where the links are to be saved.


Furthermore, by selecting the corresponding check box, determine
whether the links should only be available to the current user or to all
users.
Then click on Next.

5. Click on Next to start the installation.

6. Click on Finish to end the installation and close the installation wizard.

4.2.2.2 Settings for the license server

Procedure

1. Start the license server via Start > Programs > Visual Components
> Visual Components License Server > Visual Components Li-
cense Server Manager. The Start window is opened.

2. Click on Settings.... The window for the license server settings is


opened.

3. Make the relevant settings and confirm with OK. The license is now
displayed in the list in the start window.
• The Port number 5093 is assigned.
• Commuter limit makes it possible to specify what percentage of
the licenses may be checked out.
4. In the start window, select the license and click on Add.... The input
box for the license key is opened.

5. Enter the license key and confirm with Add.

6. In the start window, select the license and click on Activate. The sta-
tus of the license changes to “Activated”.

If the Stop Local server button is visible at the upper left of the start
page, the license server has been started.
If the Start Local server button is visible at the upper left of the start
page, the license server has not been started.

If licensing is being carried out manually using a license file, this license
file must be loaded with Open license file....

4.2.2.3 Using a network license

Description

The license is located in the network and is managed by a license server.


When KUKA.Sim is executed on a computer, it is no longer available to
other users. After terminating KUKA.Sim, the license can be used on an-
other computer in the network.

Precondition

• License key has been entered on the license server.

Procedure

1. The window for activating the license opens automatically, provided


KUKA.Sim is not licensed. Click on Next to continue the activation.
2. Select the license type “Network floating license”. Then click on Next.

3. Enter the connection data:


• Name or IP address of the PC or server in the network on which
the license server is installed
• Port number: 5093
4. Click on Finish to complete the licensing.
Information about the details of the license can be found under Info >
License.

After successful confirmation of licensing, KUKA.Sim can be used. For the


period of use, the license is blocked and cannot be used by another user.
It must be ensured that the license is active for the network server and
that the user has been enabled for the network server.

An activated license for the product must be available on the server in


order to allow the user to use KUKA.Sim with a network license.

4.2.2.4 Temporarily borrowing a network license

Description

The network license can be temporarily loaned to a local computer. The


borrowing period can be freely chosen but must not exceed 90 days.
The network license is no longer available on the network for the borrow-
ing period. For this reason, no connection to the network server is re-
quired for use of the borrowed licenses for the duration of the borrowing
period. When the borrowing period has expired, the network license auto-
matically becomes available again on the network.

Procedure

1. Select the menu sequence Info > License. The following window ap-
pears.

2. Enter the desired borrowing period (number of days) in the Duration


box.
3. Click on Borrow license from server.

4.2.2.5 Renewing a network license

Procedure

1. Start the license server via Start > Programs > Visual Components
> Visual Components License Server > Visual Components Li-
cense Server Manager. The Start window is opened.

2. In the start window, select the license and click on Renew. The status
of the license changes to “Activated”.
3. Start KUKA.Sim and enter the license key.
The following window appears if there is no Internet connection:

4. Click on Generate. A file is generated.


5. Save the generated file on a computer with an Internet connection.
6. On the computer with an Internet connection, call the specified website
(https://portal.visualcomponents.net/website/Login.aspx) and load the
generated file there.
7. Save the generated license file on the computer with KUKA.Sim.
8. Click on Upload to import the license file into KUKA.Sim.
9. Click on Activate to activate KUKA.Sim.

If the Stop Local server button is visible at the upper left of the start
page, the license server has been started.
If the Start Local server button is visible at the upper left of the start
page, the license server has not been started.

If licensing is being carried out manually using a license file, this license
file must be loaded with Open license file....

4.2.2.6 Returning a network license

Description

A borrowed network license can be returned from the local computer to


the license server before it has expired.

Precondition

• The network license has been loaned to the local computer.

Procedure

1. Select the menu sequence Info > License. The following window ap-
pears.

4.2.3 Test license

Test licenses can be obtained from my.kuka.com. They can be used as


single PC licenses.

5 KUKA.Sim add-ons

5.1 Activation and licensing

Description

In addition to the basic functionality, KUKA.Sim 4.0 offers various add-ons


that can be used to expand the KUKA.Sim software.
Each add-on requires a specific product key for activation, which must be
purchased separately.

Precondition

• The KUKA.Sim 4.0 basic software has already been licensed.


• License key for the add-on is available.
The license information for the respective add-on can be found on
the KUKA delivery note.

Procedure

1. Start KUKA.Sim 4.0.


2. Menu sequence File > Options > Add-ons
3. Click on the Activate button for the desired add-on.
4. Follow the dialog, enter the product key and activate the add-on.

Computer exchange

If a computer is exchanged, the licenses of the add-ons must be deactiva-


ted manually before uninstallation.

6.1 Requesting support

Introduction

This documentation provides information on operation and operator con-


trol, and provides assistance with troubleshooting. For further assistance,
please contact your local KUKA subsidiary.

Information

The following information is required for processing a support re-


quest:
• Description of the problem, including information about the duration
and frequency of the fault
• As comprehensive information as possible about the hardware and
software components of the overall system
The following list gives an indication of the information which is rele-
vant in many cases:
‒ Model and serial number of the kinematic system, e.g. the manip-
ulator
‒ Model and serial number of the controller
‒ Model and serial number of the energy supply system
‒ Designation and version of the system software
‒ Designations and versions of other software components or modifi-
cations
‒ Diagnostic package KRCDiag
Additionally for KUKA Sunrise: existing projects including applica-
tions
For versions of KUKA System Software older than V8: archive of
the software (KRCDiag is not yet available here.)
‒ Application used
‒ External axes used
