 PC Game Settings: a Blessing and Curse

 Over 1 Million Combinations

Game developers attempt to address this via in-game

graphics settings menus. These menus are great in that they
provide gamers a way to get an enhanced (better than
console) gaming experience if their PC is capable.

But determining the right settings for their specific PC can be

very complex. Most gamers don’t understand what each
setting means and how it affects image quality. Going
through each one and figuring it out is a complex and time
consuming process.

 How does GeForce Experience work?

 GeForce Experience has a client side and server side. On the client side, the application installs on your PC be it a desktop or
notebook. It knows what games you have installed and your hardware setup. On the server side NVIDIA has built a supercomputer
with various CPU, GPU, OS, drivers, and games installed. When you run a game through GeForce Experience, it will send a query
such as “I have a GTX 660 Ti, a Core i5, and a 1080p monitor. What settings should I use for Skyrim?” The NVIDIA Cloud will then take
this query and return the best set of settings for your given PC config.
 So let’s see the end result and the benefits of using GeForce Exp for the game settings configuration.

 How does GeForce Experience find the Optimal Settings?
1. Expert tester play through key
areas of the game
OPS is a combination of humane intelligence and
machine automation. We start with expert game
testers that play through key levels of the game to get
a feel for the load and how different settings affect
quality and performance.
3. Determine an apropriate FPS
target (40-60 fps)
As part of the game evaluation, the expert game tester
will identify an appropriate FPS target. Fast paced
games typically require higher FPS. Slower games lower
FPS. We also define and test against a minimum FPS to
make sure there are no persistent stuttering.
5. Find the highest quality settings
that satisfy frame rate target
From here on the testing is automated. The GeForce
Experience supercomputer tests the game by turning
on settings until the FPS target is reached. This is done
in the order of maximum bang for the buck; settings
that provide the most quality/perf is turned on first,
the rest later.
2. Find a demanding test case to
use as benchmark
The expert game tester identifies an area for
automated testing. This area will be from a demanding
portion of the game. We aim for 80% load. We don’t’
go for the absolute worst case because they tend to be
very infrequent and going by them skews the result for
the rest of the game.
4. Analyze how each settings
affects quality & performance
The most difficult part of OPS is deciding which settings
to turn on and which to leave off in a performance
limited setting. This is done by analyzing each setting
and assigning them quality and performance weights.
The tester does comparisons to see exactly how much
turning on each setting provides in terms of
performance and quality. These are stored as weights
which are fed to the automation algorithm.
6. For each game test across
thousands of hardware
configurations
Finally, the GeForce Experience supercomputer goes
through and tests thousands of hardware
configurations for the given game. Unique settings are
generated for each CPU, GPU, and monitor resolution
combination.

Overlay

Overlay is the easiest way to record high quality in-game videos, screenshots and
livestreams for friends.
 Press Alt+Z to access the Overlay menu
 Go to Record – Settings to select recording quality
 To log into Facebook click on the cogwheel from the right side of the
Overlay menu and select Connect
 Go to Broadcast – Settings to select the channel and quality of the
recording
