1. What is Volunteerism and Community Service?

 Volunteerism is a form of pro-social behavior that involves a freely chosen


decision, time and effort to help another person, group, cause through a non-
profit organization. Also an act done by a group of people known as volunteers
who participated on a non-profitable activities and does not expect anything in
return.
 Community Service is an unpaid work performed by a person or group of
people without any form of compensation and work that is done without pay to
help people in a community.
2. Why there is a need to study volunteerism and community service?
 To teach these values and act in every member of the community.
 It nurtures people to become functional and active citizens.
 Volunteerism and community service are essential not just for the positive
impact they can make on the society — but also for the positive impact
volunteering has on the volunteers themselves.
 It enhances psychological and intellectual development.
 It boosts one's social skill and sense of responsibility.

3. Mention TOP 10 POSITIVE EFFECTS of Volunteerism and Community Service


our society?
a) Promotes good citizenship, establishes a surge in a person’s sense of social
responsibility.
b) Solves social issues and improve the community.
c) Creates a promising feeling on both the giving and receiving ends.
d) Gauges self-efficacy of a person, makes him/her feel more confident and competent.
e) It nourishes physical, mental and social aspects of the person.
f) Social connectedness is being built and promotes acceptance of differences in race,
culture and beliefs along the process.
g) Helps individuals to connect with society, promotes the sense of hospitality and
strengthens social awareness.
h) Assembles a firmer, secure, and grounded society.
i) Showcases the talents and skills while sharing it to the people.
j) It gives a sense of purpose and fulfilment, gears towards a long healthy life and
gives inspiration to other people to do the same.
4. What discourages someone to provide volunteerism and community service?
 LACK OF FREE TIME -Because of the reason that volunteerism is usually
not compulsory, some people tend to not make time for it. They usually do not
consider it as an important activity and put it at the end of their schedules. They
would rather choose an activity that would give them tangible benefits.
 VOLUNTEER ROLES AREN'T INTERESTING -Some people don’t think
that these activities are for them, it doesn’t suit their tastes and they fail to find
a fun and enjoying reason to join.
 MOST OF THE TIME, IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO DO -The word
requirement drives students to act upon such activities, but when it is not
included in the sentence, students won’t feel the need to join since it wouldn’t
give them something in return.
 THE LOCATION IS OUT OF REACH -Since volunteering includes
activities that helps people, usually the location is on remote areas, away from
the center of the town or community. This becomes a hindrance to people that
don’t have the fund to travel the distance even if they really want to help.
 UNFORTUNATE ENCOUNTERS IN THE PAST-There are some people
who experienced bad treatment or accidents during the times they volunteered
which has now become a hindrance for them to do community service.
 I ALREADY JOINED BEFORE -Some people believe that doing it once
means it is all over because they have already experienced doing it. They may
have gotten over the thrill of it or they already got rid of the curiosity about it.
5. Mention 10 inspiring individuals who have shown significant volunteerism and
community
service to our countrymen. (Provide brief description about the service they have
rendered)
a) ANGEL LOCSIN — a film and television actress, commercial model, activist
to support women and children and a member of Gabriela Foundation, and a
volunteer on various drives to distribute food, clothing, and other basic needs.
As the pandemic started in our nation, Angel contributed a lot by initiating
various donation drives to help our front liners and unfortunate families who
were greatly affected during the lockdown.
b) JEDDA PUNZALAN — a full-time faculty member at Our Lady of Fatima
University. Jedda dedicated her Sundays for the kids of tondo. She knows the
struggles of being poor as she grow up in a same circumstance.
c) CATRIONA GRAY — Miss Universe 2018, Singer, and Model. She
advocates lending her voice to the underpriveled Filipino Children and also
helping with various NGO's in supporting HIV/AIDS Awareness, Mental health
awareness, and donation and charity drives for helping the impoverish places.
d) KAREN IBASCO — Miss Earth 2017, Medical Physicist, and Former College
Instructor. She Advocate on Sustainable Energy Resources such as thermal and
sun energy. She also joined in various organizations in protecting endangered
plants and wildlife in the Philippines and along with various projects that
promotes saving water and consume less plastic products and recycling plastic
waste.
e) KYLE VERSOZA — Miss International 2016, Actress, and Model. She
advocates on mental health issue and awareness as she also experienced the gray
days. Along with various drives, Kylie devote herself in advocating mental
health and to further expand her knowledge she was welcomed in Institute of
Mental Health in Singapore.
f) BTS —they are known for having advocacies in their music, and how they're a
great influence to the youth. They are also involved in a lot of charity works.
They launched a global campaign with UNICEF called Love Myself to support
child and teen victims of domestic and school violence as well as sexual assault.
The campaign raised over $1.4 Million. BTS and Big Hit Entertainment donated
an additional 500 million won (around $447,000 USD). They also donated $1
Million to support black lives matter campaign and their fans matched and
donated an exact amount within a day.
g) LLOYD CADENA —The late YouTube influencer, Lloyd Cadena was
admired for his generosity in doing a lot of charity works for the less fortunate.
He donated school supplies to underprivileged children and extended support
for COVID-19 relief efforts.
h) BASEL MANADIL —Basel Manadil is a Syrian vlogger who stays in the
Philippines. His contents were primarily helping people and extending his help
to them. His YouTube Channel The Hungry Syrian Wanderer is notable for its
helping typhoon victims or people that are trending for being hardworking
people, such as food delivery drivers. His latest vlog was helping a Korean man
who sells ramen that got stuck in the Philippines after lockdown.
i) BRAD PITT AND ANGELINA JOLIE —Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
founded The Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation in 2016, which seeks to help
refugees and aid humanitarian work. The foundation raised $1 million donations
to Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children on its launching.

j) EMMA WATSON —Emma Watson, “Harry Potter” actor and Global


Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women, started the drive called HeForShe where
she addresses her call to promote equal rights saying “It’s not just a women’s
issue, it’s a human rights issue.” This campaign has been creating conversations
around the world, mobilizing the future generations for change.

7. What kind of community SERVICE would you like to offer to community and why?
 The kind of Community Service I would definitely like to do is to teach
children the importance of education and imparting to them that learning is
fun. I’ve lived in a neighborhood where thinking education is not for them
and a waste of time because they can’t see the great importance and they
indulge themselves in their temporary bitter sweet present life. With that
being said, as a youth who also equip with knowledge to instill to the
younger generation it is an honor and responsibility that I know I can
possibly do.
