PART II: MY ROLE IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION

“With micro efforts will have macro effects,” this is one notable quotation that
gave a big impact on Miss Earth 2017 stage by Miss Earth 2017 winner Karen Ibasco.
She pertains that with small efforts it will create a massive effect. I can instill that quote
into my drive force to create a butterfly effect to our community. With small steps this
will give a greater path for change because we have the power to influence and create
big chances.

As a student, youth, and human being, we have limited capability as we are not
as powerful as it seems but together we can create miracle. These are the small steps
that soon blooms into an enormous result.
1. Cut down the usage of private vehicle if the destination is in short-distance. It is
to lessen the gas pollution being emitted.
2. Using tote bags to replace plastic bags whenever going to market.
3. Power conservation – turning off of any appliances when not in use.
4. Stop animal abuse.
5. As much as possible use reusable utensils like cups, spoons, forks, and straw to
lessen the plastic waste.
6. Use organic fertilizer and avoid as much as possible the chemical based fertilizer.
7. Do not cut trees without license. Only who has authority can do it.
8. Please plant trees on designated area. It is for them to monitor and tend it
needs.
9. Instilling the 4R’s.
10.Educate people in the community on ways to protect and conserve our
environment.

Ensuring that these small steps will achieve greater height of success as long as
we have the initiative and drive to push through our limits by doing it together.

PART III: FOOD SECURITY IN ACTION

According to FAO, “Food security exists when all people, at all times, have
physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for a healthy and
active life.”
Food security is one of the greatest problems faced the world. It is fact that food
is enough for everyone in the world but because of the great changes which happened
rapidly in the world the rate of food become less than before and it is difficult to secure
it.
According to the arcticle of Mondal, there are various reason for having food
problem but the major causes are: population growth, low productivity, vigorous
farming, natural calamities, and less support from developing countries. These factors
include a broad spectrum of socioeconomic issues with great influence on farmers and
on the impoverished in particular.
Large shares of the world’s small-scale farmers, particularly in central Asia and in
Africa, are constrained by access to markets, while inputs, such as fertilizers and seed,
are expensive. With lack of irrigation water, infrastructure and investments, and low
availability of micro-finance combined with dependency on few multinational suppliers,
crop production is unlikely to increase in those regions where it is needed the most,
unless major policy changes and investments take place. These constraints are further
compounded by conflicts and corruption.
The Philippines is mainly an agricultural country composed of 7,107 islands.
Approximately 30% of families live in poverty. Two-thirds of the country’s total
population depends on coastal resources, including agriculture, aquaculture and
fisheries.
Food supply in the Philippines has been gravely affected by a string of natural
calamities that have rendered farmer crops unusable, while problems caused by the
lack of adequate infrastructure have posed an unnecessary and formidable challenge to
farmers. A growing income gap between the upper and lower classes has hampered
proper access and utilization to food, especially for those who lie in the lower income
brackets.
According to the abovementioned statements, these are just some of the
problems facing the agricultural sector in the Philippines that will hopefully be

addressed in the near future. Providing a proper system and adequate salaries and
benefits will promote agriculture. Providing knowledge of machinery to low-income
agricultural workers should be intensified. Development of machinery and providing
adequate support to local products. Support and importation of not only raw materials
but finished products must be manifested.
