Values Presented in the Story (5 pts. each):

1. “Huwag magpakita ng kalupitan sa pagnanasang igagalang ng tao.”

● When someone fights or teases me I just let them do what they want and I don't
fight with them and instead I just do what's right and I just extend my patience
when it comes to people like them because I won't get anything out of it.

2. “Huwag kalilimutan ang katungkulang lumingap sa lahat, mahal man at hindi.”

● Previously when the time came when my friend needed help from us his friends
I was the one who was there and I helped him. That's why when I was the one
who had a problem and needed help from them; he was also the one who helped
me because maybe he remembered the help I did with him when he was the one
who had the problem.

3. “Ang karangalan sa mundo ay para rin ng mundo na may katapusan.”

● When I sometimes have difficulty in my studies I don’t think of giving up.

Instead I become positive and I think of my ambition and dreams for the future.
And then I continue my duty as a student to study well so that in the future I can
have a good life and help my family.

4. “Ang kamahalan at karangalan ang dapat humanap ng ulong puputungan, at di ang ulo ang dapat
humanap ng koronang ipuputong.”

● When we had an activity at school and I was the leader in our group we had
awarding’s after we had that activity. And our work was presented as unique of
all so I was sent to the front where I was given the award but I knew it shouldn't
be for me because I knew my co-member in the group deserved it more because
I saw him work hard to do that , so I gave him the award.

5. “Ang karangalan, sa karaniwan, ay may kalangkap ng mabigat na katungkulan.”

● When I choose to be a leader in our class I don't just accept it first but I think
about it first and I assess myself if I can fulfill the role of a leader and do the
responsibilities assigned to me.
II. In 2 or more paragraphs, discuss your thoughts about the idea given below:

“Spanish Colonization brought a great impact to the Philippine culture and literature.”

THE SPANISH INFLUENCE

Spain is one of the foreign countries that colonized our country for more than three
hundred years. The Spanish changed the lives of Filipinos. We say that these are the
days when we were captured but we fail to realize the Spaniard’s influences that we
practice up until now. Even though the Filipinos experienced the inhumanity of the
Spaniards, still they influenced our way of living and until today we still use and make
those influences in our daily lives. And we also give thanks to the Spanish because they
converted the Filipino into Catholicism because if the Spain had not succeeded to
colonize our country, then our country would have been a Muslim nation now.

Catholicism is the most important contribution that the Spanish gave to us. This is not
just an influence in religion but also a permanent influence in culture and society. It is
evident that we still practice the Spanish influences as a way of life of Filipinos. Just like
the words we use today their influence is evident even by the way we name our utensils
(kutsara, plato, etc.), counting numbers (uno, dos, tres), and even our surnames
(Villanueva, Estacion, Oracion). Good or bad we can’t deny the Spanish influence in
Filipino culture because their influence is permanently embedded in our culture and it
cannot be undone.

Regarding Philippine literature, the Spaniards have exerted a strong influence using
their own literature. The first Filipino alphabet called the ALIBATA was replaced by the
Roman alphabet. Folk songs became widespread in the Philippines. There are also many
recreational plays performed by Filipinos during the Spanish times. Almost all of them
were in poetic form.

Diversity and originality of the Philippine culture are outstanding and are heavily
influenced by the Spanish. Through the literature, religion, lifestyles, societal classes
that Spaniards had brought in our life. In that way it helps us to have values and to
appreciate the things that the colonizers brought and taught us to appreciate especially
in literature. Even though they are the reason why Filipinos experienced suffering,
hardship, persecution etc. during their colonization, still we learned some good things
from them. And they have also contributed to good things in our country, especially to
us Filipinos.
