In  the  next  two  weeks,  you  will  be  familiar  with  the  contributions  and 
influences  of  Asian  musical  theater  arts  and  instruments;  and  familiarize  on 
how  to  effectively  develop  paragraphs  to  illustrate  a  text  type.  Through  the  following 
lessons and activities, you are expected to: 
1. Develop  paragraphs  that  illustrate  each  text  type  (narrative  in  literature, expository, 
explanatory, factual and personal recount, persuasive). 
2. Identifies  the  elements  and  principles  of  arts  as  manifested  in  Asian  festivals  and 
theatrical forms. 
3. Describes the instruments that accompany Kabuki Japanese opera.

By  the  end  of  this  lesson,  you  are  expected  to  make  your  own  kabuki  stage 
design  and  a  short  theater  story.  This  will  be  your  third  assessment  for  this 
quarter. Read the directions carefully and follow the criteria.

READING 2: KABUKI INSTRUMENTS AND ACCOMPANIMENT  


 
The  hayashi  is  made  up  of  four 
instruments:  fue  (flute),  kotsuzumi 
(shoulder  drum),  ōtsuzumi  (hip 
drum),  and  taiko  (stick  drum), 
these  four  instruments  are  also 
known  as  the  shibyōshi.  Most  of 
the  musicians  are  from  an 
established  family  in  the  noh 
world. 
 
 
Debayashi,  is  music  played  onstage  by  the  shamisen  and  Hayashi  flute  and 
percussion  ensemble,  visibly  accompanying  the  acting  and  dancing.  There  may  be  a 
Nagauta  group  in  one  section,  a  Tokiwazu  in  another,  and  Gidayu  Jorori  musicians  in 
yet another. 

Kabuki Music 
Geza (off-stage)  For  sound  effects  (o-daiko,  other  percussion,  shamisen, 
nohkan) 
Chobo (stage left)  ‘Narrator’ (speaker and shamisen) 
Debayashi (stage rear)  Literally,  the  “coming  out  orchestra”  (multiple  singers, 
shamisen, drums, nohkan) 
 
The  hyōshigi  is  a  simple  Japanese  musical  instrument, 
consisting  of  two pieces of hardwood or bamboo often connected 
by  a  thin  ornamental  rope.  The clappers are played together or on 
the floor to create a cracking sound.  
 
  Hyudorodoro  is  used  to  mark  the 
appearance  of  the  ghost  played  by  the  instruments  of  flute  and 
drum.
