RBI imposed restrictions on Indian Mercantile Cooperative Bank Ltd

 RBI recently imposed several restrictions on Indian Mercantile Cooperative Bank Ltd, Lucknow,
including a cap of Rs 1 lakh on withdrawals.
 The restrictions came into force from the closure of business hours on January 28, 2022.
 As per RBI, the Lucknow-based co-operative bank will not, without its prior approval, grant or renew any
loans and advances, or make any investment. The restrictions would remain in force for six months and
are subject to review.
 RBI has imposed the above restriction in the exercise of powers vested in it under sub-section (1) of
Section 35 A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

RBI cancels the licence of Nashik’s Independence Co-operative Bank Limited

 Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the license of Independence Co-operative Bank Ltd., Nashik,
Maharashtra w.e.f February 03, 2022. The major reason for the cancellation of the license by RBI is that
bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
 This means that it does not comply with the provisions of Section 11(1) and Section 22 (3) (d) read
with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
 The bank has stopped operation from the close of business on February 3, putting depositors of the

bank in trouble.
 They would however receive up to Rs five lakh from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee
Corporation (DICGC), after the bank’s liquidation.

RBI cautions public against forex trading on unauthorised platforms

 RBI recently cautioned the public not to undertake forex trading on unauthorised Electronic Trading
Platforms (ETPs) or remit money against such transactions as these actions attract penalty under the
Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
 It has noticed misleading advertisements of unauthorised ETPs offering forex trading facilities to Indian
residents, including on social media platforms, search engines, Over The Top (OTT) platforms,
gaming apps and the like.

RBI keeps Repo Rate unchanged at 4.0 per cent

 The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept the repo rate unchanged
at 4 per cent for the 10th consecutive time while maintaining an ‘accommodative stance’ as long as
necessary.
 The reverse repo rate will continue to be 3.35 per cent.
 RBI has projected the real GDP growth for 2022-23 at 7.8 per cent.
 For the current fiscal year, RBI projected real GDP growth of 9.2 per cent and expects that it will take
the economy above the pre-pandemic level.
 For the current fiscal year, RBI retained its retail inflation projection at 5.3 per cent.

RBI reopens Voluntary Retention Route with investment limit of Rs 2,50,000 cr

 RBI recently increased Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) for investment limit from Rs. 1,50,000
crores to Rs. 2,50,000 crores.
 It had introduced the Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) for investments by Foreign Portfolio Investors
(FPIs) in debts in 2019 with an investment limit of Rs 1,50,000 crore.
 The minimum retention period shall be three years.
 Investment limits shall be available ‘on tap’ and allotted on a ‘first-come, first-served basis.
 The ‘tap’ shall be kept open till the limit is fully allotted.
 FPIs may apply for investment limits online to Clearing Corporation of India Ltd. (CCIL) through their
respective custodians.
 CCIL will separately notify the operational details of the application process and allotment.

RBI becomes 2nd largest buyer of gold in 2021

 The largest buyer, the Central Bank of Thailand, bought 90 metric tonnes of gold while RBI bought
77.5 metric tonnes taking its total gold reserve to 754.1 tonnes at the end of December 2021, as per
World Gold Council data.
 India’s official gold reserves is the ninth-largest in the world.

RBI extended deadline for NBFCs to meet new NPA up-gradation norms

 Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the deadline for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs)
to comply with new Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) classification norms to September 2022 from the
earlier deadline of March 2022.
 As per the ‘Prudential norms on Income Recognition, Asset Classification and Provisioning pertaining to
Advances – Clarifications’, which was issued by RBI on November 15, 2021, the loan accounts that are
classified as NPAs could be upgraded as ‘standard’ assets only if entire arrears of interest and principal
are paid by the borrower.

RBI asks NBFCs to implement core financial services solution by September 2025

 RBI recently asked certain class of Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) to mandatorily
implement ‘Core Financial Services Solution (CFSS)’ by September 30, 2025 in order to provide
seamless customer interface as well as have a centralised data base.
 CFSS is akin to the Core Banking Solution (CBS) adopted by banks.

 RBI has proposed to assess the impact of the multi-media awareness campaigns launched by it to
promote financial literacy and also safe banking practices.
 The RBI runs the ‘RBI Kehta Hai’ campaign to educate and empower the public about banking
regulations, and also to make them aware of good and safe banking practices.
 It was a multi-media multi-lingual campaign using SMSes, print, television channels, radio, hoardings,
websites and social media.
 Inviting the request for proposal (RFP) from certain shortlisted entities, the RBI said they would be
required to undertake outcome and impact assessment of its multilingual, pan-India public awareness
campaigns.

 The RBI campaigns are in 14 languages — Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada,
Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu with more focus on regional
languages.

RBI announces dollar/rupee two-year sell buy swap auction

 RBI recently announced a US Dollar/Rupee two-year sell-buy swap auction with a view to elongating
the maturity profile of its forward book and smoothening the receivables relating to forwarding assets.
 It will undertake a sell/buy swap auction of $5 billion, which will enable access to a wider set of market
participants.
 RBI will conduct a spot sale to sell USD 5 billion to banks in exchange of rupees, through this auction
on March 10, 2022.
 On March 11, 2024, it will make a forward purchase from banks in two years.
 The forward purchase will help in reducing RBI’s current foreign exchange reserves and increase its
two-year forward USD purchases.

Under the swap, a bank would sell US dollars to the RBI. It will simultaneously agree to buy the same amount of
US dollars at the end of the swap period. The swap transaction is materially different from OMOs (open market
operations). OMOs refer to a central bank's buying and selling of government securities in the 'open market'. On
the other hand, in swap transaction, only authorised dealers, mainly banks, will be allowed to deposit US dollars in
exchange for rupees.

SEBI comes out with new disclosure format for abridged prospectus

 SEBI has come out with a new format for disclosures in abridged prospectus, whereby critical
information will be provided in the front page of the offer document to further simplify and provide greater
clarity.
 Under the rules, every application form for the purchase of any securities of a company needs to be
accompanied by an abridged prospectus.
 Under the revised format, a company will have to disclose about name of the promoter, details of offer to
public — types of issue, fresh issue and offer for sale (OFS) component, total issue size — and
share reservations details on the front page of the abridged prospectus.

 SEBI recently restructured its advisory committee on Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF),
under the chairmanship of G Mahalingam.
 The advisory committee on IPEF is an eight-member committee.

of the SEBI Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF).

Separation of chairperson, MD positions at listed companies will be voluntary, not mandatory: Sebi

 Sebi decided to implement the requirement to separate the positions of Chairperson and Managing
Director at listed companies on a voluntary basis and not make it mandatory for now.
 The top-500 listed entities were required to split the roles of Chairperson and Managing
Director/Chief Executive Officer before the April 2022 deadline.

 Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) board has decided to make provision for separation of
the roles of chairperson and MD/CEO as ‘voluntary’ against ‘mandatory’ earlier.
 It had set up a committee on corporate governance under Uday Kotak with a view to seek
recommendations to further enhance corporate governance norms for listed companies in 2017.
 One of the recommendations of Uday Kotak committee was the separation of the roles of chairperson
and MD/CEO of listed companies.

SEBI rejigs advisory committee on alternative investment policy

 SEBI has reconstituted its alternative investment policy advisory committee, which advises the capital
markets regulator on a range of issues that impact further development of the AIF space.

 The committee has now 20 members, as per an update by the Securities and Exchange Board of India
(SEBI).
 The panel, which was constituted by Sebi in March 2015, earlier had 22 members.
 The committee is chaired by Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy. Apart from Murthy, the
committee includes members from Sebi, Ministry of Finance, AIF players and industry associations.

SEBI extends deadline to implement swing pricing mechanism for MFs

 SEBI recently extended the deadline to May 1 for implementation of swing pricing mechanism, for
mutual fund schemes, aimed at discouraging large investors from sudden redemptions.
 The new framework, aimed at ensuring fairness in treatment of entering, exiting and existing investors in
mutual fund schemes, particularly during market dislocation, was to be applicable from March 1.
 Based on the request received from Amfi, it has been decided to extend the implementation date of the
provisions of swing pricing mechanism to May 1, 2022.

Sebi notifies amendment to depositories, participants norms

 Sebi has notified amendments to the depositories and participants norms, hiking the net worth
requirement for trading members.
 As per the revised norms, stock brokers are required to have a net worth of Rs 3 crore, within one year
of the date of notification.
 This net worth shall be increased to Rs 5 crore within two years of the date of notification.
 It also provides that a self-clearing member fulfilling the net worth requirements as provided under the
Securities and Exchange Board of India (Stock Brokers) Regulations, 1992, will also be eligible to
register as a depository participant.

 Nepal will be the first country to adopt India’s UPI system by the National Payments Corporation of

Payments Service (GPS) & Manam Infotech to provide the services.
 GPS is the authorized payment system operator in Nepal.
 Nepal shall be the first country outside of India to adopt UPI as the payments platform driving the

Banks to transfer 15 NPA accounts worth Rs 50,000 crores to NARCL in FY22

 Recently, SBI Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said that National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd
(NARCL) or bad bank and IndiaDebt Resolution Company Ltd (IDRCL) are ready to commence
operations.
 A total of 38 Non-Performing Asset (NPA) accounts worth Rs 82,845 crore have been identified to be
transferred to NARCL initially.
 In Phase I, 15 stressed assets (i.e., Non-Performing Asset accounts) worth Rs 50,000 crore will be
transferred to NARCL in the current financial year. Public Sector Banks have taken a majority stake in
NARCL, IDRCL will be majorly owned by private sector banks.

National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) is the proposed bad bank for taking over stressed assets
of lenders. It was announced in the Budget for 2021-22. The plan is to create a bad bank to house bad loans of
₹500 crore and above, in a structure that will contain an asset reconstruction company (ARC) and an asset

 Chitra Ramkrishna, the former MD and CEO of NSE, was steered by a yogi dwelling in the Himalayan
ranges in the appointment of Anand Subramanian as the exchange’s group operating officer and advisor
to MD, according to a Sebi order.
 Further, Ramkrishna gave “frequent, arbitrary and disproportionate” increase in compensation to
Subramanian when there was no evidence of any performance evaluation being done for him and nor
was there any evidence to satisfy the rating of A+ given to him for giving such high increment.

vouchers.’

extended by another Rs 50,000 crore. The total cover under the scheme is now Rs 5 lakh crore. An
additional amount has been earmarked for the hospitality sector.
 Income from transfer of digital assets (Cryptocurrency) to be charged 30% tax, plus 1% tax on the
transaction.

 Vedanta Ltd recently tied up a facility of Rs 8,000 crores (replacement facility) with Union Bank of India
at 7.75% to take over the majority of the syndicated facility after discussions with lenders.

 The Government of India has done a conversion switch transaction of its securities with the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) for an amount of 1,19,701 crores (face value).

 The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has released new guidelines for advertisers

(NFTs).
 The guidelines will be applicable to all advertisements released or published after 1 April 2022.
 Earlier advertisements shouldn’t appear in the public domain after 15 April 2022 unless they comply with
the new guidelines.
 In accordance with the new guidelines, all advertisements for VDA products, VDA exchanges or
featuring VDAs should carry a disclaimer that says, “Crypto products and NFTs are unregulated and can
be highly risky. There may be no regulatory recourse for any loss from such transactions”.

 The Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary near Jamnagar in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar
Pradesh have been listed as Wetlands of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention, an
international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
 With this, the total number of Ramsar sites in India goes up to 48.
 Khijadiya, which is part of the Central Asian Flyway, has become the fourth wetland of Gujarat to get the
Ramsar tag. Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Thol Wildlife Sanctuary and Wadhwana wetland are the other
Ramsar sites in the state.
 Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary, a freshwater marsh in the Sant Kabir Nagar district, is the largest natural
floodplain wetland of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Sanctuary was established in 1980 and is protected
under the Wildlife Protection Act (1972); an eco-sensitive zone extends up to a kilometre around its
boundary.

highlighted the 11th century saint’s message of equality of all.
 The ‘Statue of Equality’ commemorates Ramanujacharya who promoted the idea of equality in all

 The inauguration of the 'Statue of Equality' which is a part of a 12-day Sri Ramanuja Sahasrabdi
Samarohan, is the ongoing 1000th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Ramanujacharya.
 While the statue was conceptualized by Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swami of Sri Ramanujacharya Ashram, it
is made up of 'panchaloha', a combination of five metals including gold, silver, copper, bronze and
zinc and is one of the tallest metallic statues in sitting positions in the world.
 Also, it has been mounted on a 54-feet high base building named ‘Bhadra Vedi' and has a floor devoted
to the works of Sri Ramanujacharya including a Vedic digital library, ancient Indian texts, a research
centre, a theatre, and an educational gallery.

Aravalli Biodiversity Park declared as ‘Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures’ site

 The Union Ministry of environment, forest and climate change announced Aravalli Biodiversity Park as
India’s first “other effective area-based conservation measures” (OECM) site.
 The proposal to declare Aravalli Biodiversity Park an OECM site was sent by the National Biodiversity
Authority to the IUCN in December 2020.
 The OECM tag is given by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to areas that are
not protected but support rich biodiversity. Aravalli Biodiversity Park in Gurugram has been notified as to
the first OECM site in the country.
 The Aravalli Biodiversity Park is spread across 390 acres and has semi-arid vegetation, with around 300
native plants, 101,000 trees, 43,000 shrubs and several species of birds.

Ahmedabad route. The construction of bullet train station in Surat is scheduled to be completed by
December 2024.
 The bullet train station in Surat will be the first in India to be built between Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-
Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). The MAHSR corridor will have 12 stations namely Surat, Vadodara,
Anand, Ahmedabad, Sabarmati, Bilimora, Bharuch, Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi stations.
 The Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed train project will reduce the travel time between Mumbai in
Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat to 2.07 hours with limited stops and 2.58 hours with stopping at
every station.

 India has agreed to provide a grant to Sri Lanka to implement a ‘Unitary Digital Identity framework’,
apparently modelled on the Aadhaar card.
 The Rajapaksa government will prioritise the implementation of the Framework as a national level
programme.
 Under the proposed Unitary Digital Identity Framework, it is expected to introduce a personal identity
verification device based on biometric data, a digital tool that can represent the identities of individuals in
cyberspace, and the identification of individual identities that can be accurately verified in digital and
physical environments by combining the two devices.

o The plant has been set up at a cost of Rs 150 crore.


o It has a capacity of processing 550 metric tonnes per day.
o The plant can generate 17,500 kg biogas and 100 tonne high-quality compost every day.
o Biogas will be generated through 100 per cent wet waste. The plant will produce CNG with 96
per cent pure methane gas.
o 50 per cent of the biogas generated will be provided to run public transport vehicles, while the
remaining will be made available for different industries.
o Nearly 400 buses in Indore might soon run on biogas generated at the plant.
o The 15-acre ground where the plant has been set up used to be a dumping zone.
o The plant has been made on PPP model, and the company that made the plant will pay Indore
Municipal Corporation Rs 2.5 crore per annum for 20 years.
o The technology will help purify the air quality of densely populated cities by mitigating 1,30,000
tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

 One important feature of this scheme is the online portal which has been developed by the
Department. This portal will ensure seamless registration and will also act as a repository of the data on
these communities. It will provide real time status of the application to the applicant. The payment to the

 The other implementing agencies are Ministry of Rural Development, National Rural Livelihood Mission
(NRLM) and National Health Authority (NHA).
 The Scheme will have following four components with an approximate cost of Rs 200 crore to be spent
over a period of 5 years starting Financial Year 2021-22 to 2025-26.

Centre Approves New India Literacy Programme

 The Central government has approved the ‘New India Literacy Programme’ for financial years 2022-
27 which will now cover all aspects of Adult Education in the country, in line with National Education
Policy (NEP) 2020.
 ‘Adult Education’ will now be called ‘Education For All’.
 The number of non-literates in the country in the age group of 15 years and above was 25.76 crore (9.08
crore male and 16.68 crore female) according to the 2011 census. Currently, an estimated 18.12 crore

India's first Biosafety Level-3 mobile laboratory launched in Maharashtra

 India's first Biosafety level-3 containment mobile laboratory was launched in Maharashtra's
Nashik.
 The mobile laboratory has been set up to investigate newly emerging and re-emerging viral infections
that are highly infectious and of lethal potential to human beings.
 It has been designed and built by the Indian Council of Medical Research in collaboration with Mumbai-
based bio-safety equipment maker Klenzaids.
 The mobile laboratory can be simply driven around to various locations, like a normal bus. It will be able
to reach remote and forested areas where specially trained ICMR scientists will be able to investigate
outbreaks using samples from humans and animal sources. The same will ensure on-site diagnosis with
a quick turnaround time for reporting these outbreaks.

Education ministry approves continuation of RUSA scheme till 2026

 The Ministry of Education has approved the scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan
(RUSA) for continuation till 2026.
 RUSA is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for funding the state government universities and
colleges to achieve the aims of equity, access and excellence.
 The proposal entails an expenditure of Rs 12,929.16 crore out of which the central share is Rs 8,120.97
crores and the state share is of Rs 4,808.19 crores. It has been envisaged to support around 1,600
projects under the new phase of the scheme.
 The new phase of RUSA targets to reach out the unserved, underserved areas, remote and rural areas,
difficult geographies, aspirational districts, tier-2 cities, areas with low GER, to benefit the most
disadvantaged areas and SEDGs (Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups).

Government launched ‘Heal by India’ initiative to make India a global leader in healthcare sector
and medical education

 The central government is working on a plan to make India the global source for the health sector
through the ‘Heal by India’ initiative.
 The Union Health Ministry had conducted a two-day long ‘Chintan Shivir-Heal By India’ event and in that
meeting, the government worked on the provision of the necessary facilities to ensure that the Indian
health sector becomes a global source.
 This initiative comes at a time when there was a lot of pressure on our healthcare infrastructure in India
due to the pandemic and now the focus will be to improve the primary and tertiary healthcare and overall
strengthening of the medical infrastructure in the country.

India’s first water taxi service launched in Mumbai

 The Maharashtra government flagged off India’s first water taxi service in Mumbai.
 This new service will drastically reduce the time taken to travel from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, a
city spread across Thane and Raigad districts in the mainland, and vice versa by road. So while a trip by
road takes 90-100 minutes, the water taxi service — under which commuters will travel by speedboat or
catamaran — will cut this travel time to 45-50 minutes.
 The project will connect the island city with various destinations on the mainland as well as tourist spots
like Elephanta Island and Kanhoji Angre Isle.

India to set up first IIT abroad in UAE under newly inked trade deal

 The government of India will be setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) as a part of the India-UAE trade deal.
 This will be the first time an IIT would be established outside of the country.
 India currently has 23 IITs, which are considered to be premiere institutes and offer a range of degrees
starting from B.Tech to doctoral programmes.
 The deal highlighted that the two nations will also set up an India–UAE cultural council to facilitate
and promote cultural projects, cross-cultural exchanges, exhibitions, among others.
 Both India and the UAE have also agreed to support each other’s clean energy missions and set up a
joint hydrogen task force to scale up technologies, primarily that of producing green hydrogen.

PM CARES For Children Scheme Extended Up To 28 February

 The Ministry of Women and Child Development said that the centre has extended the PM Cares for
Children Scheme till 28 February 2022, amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
 Earlier the scheme was valid till 31 December 2021.
 All eligible children can now be enrolled till 28 February 2022 to avail of benefits of the PM CARES for

India, Malaysia, and Thailand.

be ready by the end of 2023 and IEX to be ready in mid-2024.
 High-capacity and high-speed systems like IEX and IAX are expected to provide more than 200 tbps of

Salesforce Global Digital Skills Index 2022

 Salesforce published its Global Digital Skills Index revealing global employee sentiments and readiness
to acquire the key digital skills needed by business today and over the next five years.
 The Index is based on a survey of over 23,500 workers in 19 countries, with an average global
readiness score of 33 out of 100.
 In India 72% of respondents say they are very actively learning digital skills now to prepare themselves
for the future of work. 66% of respondents in India also said they feel very equipped with resources to
learn digital skills.
 Digital marketing has been ranked as the top workplace skill in India with only 39% of respondents
rating their workplace digital marketing skills level as ‘advanced’.
 Globally (51%) of respondents and in India (54%) of respondents want to learn new skills to help them
grow their current career. By harnessing the potential of existing workforces, businesses can speed
progress towards closing their skills gaps.

In 2021, J&K was the most dangerous place for Indian journalists

 At least 6 journalists were killed and 121 media houses were targeted in India in 2021, according to
an India Press Freedom Report 2021 released by the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG).
 Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura topped the list of states and
Union territories where journalists and media houses were targeted in 2021.

EUI Democracy Index 2021

 The Democracy Index is an index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research
division of the Economist Group, a UK-based private company which publishes the weekly newspaper
The Economist.
 The index attempts to measure the state of democracy in 167 countries and territories, of which 166 are
sovereign states and 164 are UN member states.
 Norway topped the list.
 India is ranked 46 on the global index with an overall score of 6.91.
 Afghanistan is at the bottom of the list.

 India has ranked third in the world for LEED certified green buildings in 2021 in the US Green
Building Council (USGBC) annual list.
 China and Canada are at the first two positions.

India can add $20 billion to GDP if import dependence on China is halved: Report

 India can add USD 20 billion to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if the country can reduce by 50
per cent the dependence on imports from China by leveraging the production linked incentive
schemes, as per an SBI research report.
 In terms of imports, India continued to reduce its trade deficit with China in FY21. However, share of
China in India’s total merchandise imports has been steadily increasing to 16.5 per cent currently.

IISc. commissions one of India’s most powerful supercomputers

 Param Pravega, a supercomputer that is touted to be one of the most powerful in the country, has
been installed at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru under the National
Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
 Param Pravega has a total supercomputing capacity of 3.3 petaflops (1 petaflop equals a quadrillion or
1,015 operations per second).
 It has been designed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

NASA Plans to Retire International Space Station in 2031

 The International Space Station will continue its operation until 2030 and then crash into an

 The de-orbit of the ISS will happen in 2031. It is meant to land around 2,500 miles east of New
Zealand’s coast.
 It will be replaced with three free-flying space stations to continue the work after ISS's retirement.

ISRO discards communication satellite INSAT-4B in space after 14 years of service

 Amid the growing concern over junk in outer space, the Indian Space & Research Organisation
(ISRO) successfully disposed of one of its satellites after it completed its operational life in orbit.
 The INSAT-4B underwent Post Mission Disposal (PMD) at the end of its service, followed by
decommissioning.
 The development is in compliance with the UN and the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination
Committee (IADC) recommended space debris mitigation guidelines.

ISRO successfully launches EOS-04, two other satellites

 The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched its earth observation satellite EOS-4
and two co-passenger technology demonstrator and scientific satellites from the first launch pad at
the country’s only spaceport in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Corbevax, Biological E’s COVID-19 Vaccine, Receives Emergency Use Approval For 12-18 Age

 The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) granted an emergency use authorisation (EUA) to
Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical giant Biological E Ltd’s coronavirus vaccine Corbevax for use in
children aged 12 to 18 years.
 With this, Corbevax became India’s third homegrown vaccine, to receive an emergency use approval in
India for use in adolescents.

NABARD launched ‘JIVA Programme’ to promote natural farming

 National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has launched the ‘JIVA
programme’.
 The objective is to promote natural farming under its existing watershed and wadi programmes in 11
states. To effectively implement the principles of agroecology long-term sustainability and transform the
pre-existing social and natural capital towards efficient farming.
 It is an agroecology-based programme, an amalgamation of several projects under the watershed
programme of NABARD and will be implemented in 11 states covering five agroecological zones, which
are in ecologically fragile and rain-fed areas.

NABARD projects Rs 6 lakh crore credit outlay for priority sectors in Maharashtra

 The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) projected a credit outlay of
Rs 6.13 lakh crore for priority sectors in Maharashtra in the next financial year.
 A ‘State Focus Paper’ projecting a potential credit outlay of Rs 6,13,503 crore to priority sectors by
NABARD was launched by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at a state-wide credit seminar.

Government continues RYSK Scheme for another 5 years

 The Central Government of India has decided to continue the scheme of “Rashtriya Yuva
Sashaktikaran Karyakram (RYSK)” for another 5 years from 2021 -22 to 2025-26 with an outlay of Rs.

allocation of Rs 4,600 crore.
 It is administered by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The scheme aims for the overall growth
and development of the food processing sector.
 In 2017, the Central Government launched SAMPADA (Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and
Development of Agro-Processing Clusters) with an allocation of Rs 6,000 crore.

Government decreases agri-cess for Crude Palm Oil from 7.5 percent to 5 percent

 The Central Government has reduced the agri-cess for Crude Palm Oil from 7.5 per cent to 5 per
cent to provide further relief to consumers and to keep in check any further rise in the prices of
domestic edible oils.
 The current basic rate of import duty of zero per cent on Crude Palm Oil, Crude Soyabean oil, and
Crude Sunflower Oil up to the 30th of September, 2022.
Government to launch ‘Meri Policy Mere Hath’ to deliver crop insurance policies

 Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare is all set to launch ‘Meri Policy Mere Hath’ that would
work as a doorstep distribution drive to deliver crop insurance policies to farmers under the Pradhan

 The farmers can use the drones to transport their produce such as fruits, vegetables and flowers to
markets in a minimal time and boost their income.

Indian Navy’s fifth Scorpene class submarine 'Vagir' commences sea trials

 The Indian Navy's brand-new submarine, the fifth of six French-designed Scorpene-class submarines
named "Vagir", sailed out on its first sea sortie and will now undergo rigorous trials before being
delivered to the Navy.
 It is constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in collaboration with the Naval
Group of France.

 The 6th edition of the exercise is aimed at providing an opportunity to enhance operational

Boeing delivers 12th P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to Indian Navy

 Boeing delivered the 12th P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to India making it the fourth of four additional
aircraft delivered under the options contract signed by the Ministry of Defence in 2016.
 The P-8I is an integral part of the Indian Navy’s fleet and has surpassed 35,000 flight hours since it was
inducted in 2013. The aircraft, with its exceptional maritime surveillance and reconnaissance
capabilities, versatility and operational readiness, has proven to be an important asset to the Navy. In
addition to unmatched maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, the P-8I has
been deployed to assist during disaster relief and humanitarian missions.

Joint Military Exercise “Ex Dharma Guardian 2022”

 A joint military exercise, “EX DHARMA GUARDIAN-2022”, between India and Japan will be conducted
at Foreign Training Node, Belagavi (Belgaum, Karnataka) from 27 February 2022 to 10 March 2022.
 Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN-2022 is an annual training event which is being conducted in India since

Three More Rafale Fighter Jets Arrive In India From France

 Three more Rafale fighter aircraft arrived in India after taking off from France.
 The ₹ 60,000 crore contract between India and France for 36 Rafale fighter jets is now nearing
completion as only one aircraft is left to be inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF)
 India had ordered 36 Rafale fighter aircraft from France in September 2016. The addition of Rafale is
seen as a major capability booster for the IAF.

Summit in India in 2023. The country has been a member of the G20 since its inception in 1999.
 As per the practice, the government is establishing a G20 Secretariat to handle work relating to
knowledge, technical, media, security and logistical aspects of India’s G20 Presidency.
 The Secretariat will be guided by an apex committee headed by Prime Minister Modi with Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and
G20 Sherpa Piyush Goyal to provide overall guidance to India’s G20 Presidency. Further, a coordination
committee will also be set up to oversee all G20 preparations and report to the apex committee.

NCB organises Darkathon -2022

 Narcotics Control Bureau, NCB, is organising in New Delhi the Darkathon -2022 to find solutions to
counter drug trafficking through darknet across the globe.
 The initiative aims at involving students, youth and technical experts to find effective solutions to unravel
the anonymity of darknet markets.
 The hackathon is being organised in three phases which will conclude on 22nd April.

Suri was designated as a senior advocate in 2009 and appointed
the ASG in June 2020. Previously, he has served as the President
of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court

A veteran Bollywood and Marathi cinema actor, director, and


producer Ramesh Deo, died of a heart attack. Deo was 93 years

Luc Montagnier French Researcher Medicine for his discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV). Their achievement sped the way to HIV tests and
antiretroviral drugs that keep the deadly pathogen at bay. He
worked as a researcher at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and as a
full-time professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

Veteran industrialist and head of the Bajaj group, Rahul Bajaj,

The versatile singer, christened the Nightingale of India, had lent

Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a Marathi musician

Awards, and was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989.
In 2001, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna for her contribution to
the arts, thereby becoming the second vocalist to receive this
honour apart from late Carnatic music giant M S Subbulakshmi.
She was also honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma
Bhushan.

 The 2022 Winter Olympics closing ceremony was held at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing on
20 February 2022.
 The president of the International Olympic Committee and the mayor of Beijing handed over the
Olympic flag to the mayors of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy, which will host the 2026 Winter
Games. The Winter Paralympics begins in Beijing on 4 March.
 The next Olympics will be the Summer Games in Paris in 2024.
 The country racking up the most medals of the 2022 Winter Olympics was Norway, with a total of 37
– 16 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze. The Russian Olympic Committee, with 32 medals, followed in 2nd

successfully bidding for it at the 139th IOC session.
 India will host the session for the first time since 1983.
 An IOC session is the annual meeting of the members of the IOC, comprising 101 voting members and
45 honorary members. It discusses and decides on the key activities of the global Olympics movement
including adoption or amendment of the Olympic Charter, the election of IOC members and office
bearers and election of the host city of the Olympics.
 Nita Ambani is the Indian representative on the committee. Apart from Ambani, Indian Olympic
Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, and India's first individual
Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra were part of the Indian delegation.

 Mirabai Chanu is set to represent India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after securing a gold
medal in the 55 kg category by lifting a total of 191 kg in the Singapore Weightlifting International.
 Chanu who was competing in the 55 kg category for the very first time lifted 191 kg (86kg+105kg) to
stand on top of the podium in an uncompetitive field.
 The 27-year-old Chanu qualified for the Birmingham 2022 in the 49kg weight category on the basis of
her Commonwealth rankings.
