Sun Tzu

Greatest strategist, He was a Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher. He was

highly regarded for his sophisticated approach to war. Instead of merely focusing on the

combative aspect of war, Sun Tzu understood that what he needed was a more scientific

approach to war. He reviewed past battles, took care of logistics, and studied the

psychology of his soldiers and enemies. His book of war was aptly named The Art of War.

He approached war as an art form, and his teachings form the basis for many a great

general and successful business leader's strategies. The book is widely influential on

military strategy. His Greatest Triumph: United the segregated, warring Chinese tribes of

the fifth century BC into a cohesive empire which dominated the world for centuries.

The Art of War, by the ancient Chinese military theorist Sun Tzu, is the most famous

work on military operation in ancient China and the books have been repeatedly translated,

investigated and discussed. Today, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War remains a compulsory text in

major military schools around the world and its influences on twentieth century military

thinking is undisputed. Also in recent times, the use of military strategies in the business

and management contexts is increasing. This paper proposes a set of criteria based on Sun

Tzu’s philosophy for evaluation of business management strategies against the world class

business excellence models. The total quality management models of the European Quality

Award and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award are used to compare with Sun

Tzu’s business management strategy model developed under the quality function

deployment (QFD) methodology. The results of the QFD methodology can be used as

performance indicators showing organisations’ improvement priorities for self‐assessment.

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

It is the management of an organization’s resources to achieve its goals and objectives.

Strategic management involves setting objectives, analyzing the competitive environment,

analyzing the internal organization, evaluating strategies, and ensuring that management

rolls out the strategies across the organization. Strategic management is divided into

several schools of thought. A prescriptive approach to strategic management outlines how

strategies should be developed, while a descriptive approach focuses on how strategies

should be put into practice. These schools differ on whether strategies are developed

through an analytic process, in which all threats and opportunities are accounted for, or are

more like general guiding principles to be applied. Strategic management is the

management of a firm's resources to successfully achieve its goals and objectives. It’s an

action plan to ensure performance targets are met, and the business continues to grow.

Strategic management provides overall direction by developing plans and policies

designed to achieve objectives and then allocating resources to implement the plans.

Ultimately, strategic management is for organisations to gain a competitive edge over their

competitors. The concept of strategic management has its roots in 1950s economic theory

based on industrial-organisational approaches. Peter Drucker, also known as the Father of

Modern Management Theory, believed that setting objectives and monitoring company

growth should permeate the entire organisation, top to bottom. Whether an organisation is

small or large is irrelevant when it comes to strategic management. Even the smallest

companies need to know how effective they are within their industry and take the

appropriate actions to achieve their desired outcome for the future.
