Throughout the first three decades of the 20th century, American society experienced profound changes and acute
conflicts. While many adopted a new cultural and social outlook and enjoyed affluence, others resisted and struggled to
cope with the changes brought by the “modern times”. In an essay, explain how the United States socially and culturally
changed during that period, especially during the 1920s (30%), and explain, by drawing from as many relevant examples
as possible, why and how conservative Americans mounted a powerful resistance against this modernization of American
society (40%). According to you, who won the “culture wars” of the Roaring Twenties? Why (provide evidence)? (20%)
