CE 759: Water Quality Modeling

Homework 3

Lake Washington Case study.

Use data from the Lake Washington case study, presented in class and available in Edmondson (W.T.)
1970 – Science 169:690-692

1. (5 pts) If sewage effluents were diverted as indicated (i.e. 25% beginning in 1963, 45% beginning
in 1965, 99% beginning in 1967), find the phosphorus concentration for each year from 1963 to
1969 from the mass balance equation.
2. (5 pts) Prepare a graph of predicted phosphorus concentrations for instantaneous total sewage
diversion and for gradual sewage diversion vs. time. Plot these two relationships on the same
graph as the actual data from Lake Washington.

3. (5 pts) Discuss whether the 0-D model was adequate for this case study. Provide rationale for your
answer. What do you consider the largest source of error in this analysis?
