DISCOURSE: BACKGROUND: CO-WORKING

The new modern communities consists of more freelancers, independent contractors and solo
enterpreneurs, and will constitute a large amount of the total workforce in the future.

Nowadays younger generations prefer to work in places where they can find a community of
like-minded people. But also a “fun and social” workplace with flexible work hours. Not everyone
can afford to buy or rent a property In the city centre with a close connection to main social networks
and customers. Increased mobility and the rise of the sharing economy has changed the way we
live, work and travel but also transformed our physical environment.

The challenge of the project lies in creating an extroverted, inclusive and a homelike working envi-
ronment that can encourage its users to interact, thereby creating a social platform enhancing work
efficiency and productivity.

The first co-working space was founded in 2005 in San Francisco. It has become a part of the cur-

CHALLENGE I DESIGN GUIDELINES :

We believe that architecture and design can considerably help in Creating an infra-
structure that could attract more passionate freelancers & entrepreneurs adhered to
any field of Design. Appropriately designed Spaces with proper consideration of influ-
encing parameters can have a positive impact on the way these individuals co-exist
and work. The goal is to design a space that promotes authentic social interaction,
Co-working, co-creation, a sustainable lifestyle, value of sharing of all kinds, circular
economy and local participation and collaboration. The building should not only fulfill
sustaianble development from an enviromental perspective but also from an aesthei-
cal and social stand point.

The students are asked to design a hub/ building that accomodates spaces for co-work-
ing & production ( Fabrication / Prototyping Labs) for designers of 2500 nos with
Recreational spaces & a Library space that is accessible for both the members and
public.

We encourage the Students to be more creative by developing their own programs,
rather than just sticking on with the defined / Stereotypical spatial requirements; the
design should accomodate innovative activities that would promote Eudaimonism.

SITE SELECTION CRITERIA : Coworking Space at EGL, Bangalore.

Students are free to site their projects anywhere across Southern India. But this is not to undervalue
the importance of site – Students should carefully consider their site (which must be a “real” site, in
an existing urban location) as the site context should inherently have significant influence over the
project’s design. The intention is these freedoms on site will maximize the diversity and creativity of
the responses.

The selection of site will also strictly be based on the following criteria.

- Must be situated in a commercial / Institutional zone ( Refer Land use map)

- Most preferably located in a CBD ( Central Business District)
- Closer Proximity of transit nodes.
- Should have a minimum area of 3 acres ( 12,138 m2 )

WeWork EGL is located in the marquee Embassy Golf Links Business Park. Surround-
ed by several major corporate headquarters, close to Bengaluru’s vibrant start-up belt, and
well-connected to both IT corridors. The building features intelligently designed collaborative
workspace, beautiful private offices, and generous conference rooms spread over 6 floors.
