Competency: Differentiates permutation from combination of
n objects taken r at a time (M10SP-IIIc-2)

Objectives: At the end of the week, you shall have:

o described the difference of permutation from combination in

terms of the order of n objects taken r at a time;
o illustrated the difference of permutation from combination of n
objects taken r at a time using the listing method;
o related the importance of the lesson in solving real life problems
accurately.

Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview

The Learning Acivity Sheets in the previous weeks were anchored on

permutation and then combination. You were able to describe and solve
problems involving both combinatorics separately. That;

Look Back!

Permutation refers to the set or sequence of objects where

arrangement or order is important. Likewise, the permutation of n objects
taken r at a time is:
n!
P(n ,r) = , n≥r
n-r !

and
Backtrack!

Combination refers to the set or sequence of objects where

arrangement or order is NOT important. Likewise, the combination of n
objects taken r at a time is:
n!
C(n ,r)= , n ≥ r.
r! n-r !

1
Since these two concepts are closely related, confusion and misconception
among learners are common. From simple problems like, how many
elimination games will there be in an Inter-Purok Tournament if there are only
four puroks in your barangay? To complex problems like, how many options
will you have if you forget your phone’s 4-digit security code? Deciding which
situation involves permutation or combination will be a challenge, if one does
not know how to distinguish each.

This week’s LAS is anchored on differentiating permutation from combination.

The situations, activities, and process questions herein are carefully designed
to help you distinguish the difference between the two. By knowing which
situation requires permutation or combination, real application of these
concepts will be much more meaningful. So read, understand, and do all the
activities required. Always remember to use a saparate sheet for all your
answers. Keep this LAS clean.

The Concept Map below will help you undestand the difference between
permutation and combination. This should guide you throughout the activity.

COMBINATORICS

Is arrangement or order of
objects n important?

YES NO

PERMUTATION COMBINATION

n! n!
P(n,r)= , n≥r C(n,r) = ,n≥r
(n – r)! r! (n – r)!

2
The following situations will draw the line between permutation and
combination.

Situation 1:

Your phone’s 4-digit security code was forgotten. You remembered the code
has the numbers 1, 9, 8, and 3 and the first is 1 but the exact sequence were
forgotten. How many possible ways can your code be recovered?
Question: What combinatorics is suitable for this situation, permutation or
combination?

Answer: PERMUTATION, since arrangement or order of each number in the

code is important. Suppose the code is simply 1983, rearranging
the order as 1893 will give another code which the phone would
NOT accept.
Illustrative Solution (Listing Method):
1398 1389 1893 1839 1983 1938
Solution:
n! 3! 3*2 6
P(n,r) = P(3,3) = P(3,3) = P(3,3) = 6 ways
(3-3)! 1 1
(n-r)!

Situation 2:

There are four (4) teams in a basketball tournament and each team
must play every other team once in the elimination round. How many
elimination games will there be?
Question: What combinatorics is suitable for this situation, permutation or
combination?
Answer: COMBINATION, since order of teams playing over the other DOES
NOT matter. Assuming that the teams are A,B,C, and D. Suppose
Team A plays with Team B or A vs. B. Rearranging the match as B
vs. A will just be the same game of the same teams as the first
one, as illustrated by the boxes below.
Illustrative Solution (Listing Method):
A vs. B A vs. C A vs. D B vs. C B vs. D C vs. D
B vs. A C vs. A D vs. A C vs. B D vs. B D vs. C

Solution:
n! 4! 4*3*2 6 6 games
C(n,r) = C(4,2) = C(4,2) = C(4,2)=
r!(n-r)! 2!(4-2)! 2*2 1

Activity 1: Fill Me In!

Directions: Complete the table below. Tell whether the following situations
require order or NOT and whether it describes a permutation or a combination.
For the second column, your answer should either be IMPORTANT or NOT. For
the third, its either PERMUTATION or COMBINATION.

SITUATION Is Order PERMUTATION

IMPORTANT or
or NOT ? COMBINATION
1. Determining the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
placers from 5 participants in a
Science Quiz Bee
2. Picking 6 balls from a basket of 12
balls
3. Choosing 3 of your 10 female
classmates to attend your party
4. Arranging 4 from your 5 friends posing
for pictures
5. Figure out the top 3 winners from 5
participants in a Math Olympiad

Activity 2. Draw the Line!

Directions: Given below is an equilateral triangle ABC. Illustrate the difference
between permutation and combination by using the listing method (for items
1 and 2) and answer the follow-up questions.

1. How many possible arrangements can be

formed from the three vertices taken two at a
B time?
2. How many unique line segments can be drawn
from this triangle?

3. What combinatorics is being illustrated by

problem no. 1?

4. What combinatorics is being illustrated by

A C
Problem no. 2?

Note: 5. What is the difference of permutation from

___ ___ ___ combination?
_AB ≅ _BC ≅AC

Activity 3. Which is Which!

Directions: Each of the following sets are similar real-life situations. Solve these
problems accurately using the appropriate combinatorics. Use
another sheet for your answer.

1. You are tasked to take pictures of Dan, Ben, Yla, Jun, and May
taking three of them at a time. How many possible ways can you
photograph them completely?

2. You are tasked to choose three of your classmates from Dan, Ben,
Yla, Jun, and May to be your group mates. How many possible
groups will you have?

Formative Test
The situations below are similar yet they differ in the ways of counting.
These would check how far you have learned in differentiating permutation
from combination. As well as, use the appropriate combinatorics in an
applicable situation. Use another sheet for your answer.

1. A friend of yours auditioned to Caraga Got Talent Online. Of the five

songs he submitted, he is required to sing any three songs. How many
ways can he make his choices?

2. Caraga Got Talent Online has declared 10 lucky singers who passed
the online audition and are qualified for the semi-final round. Suppose
the first and last singers were already determined by the judges. How
many possible ways can the singers be arranged for the online
showdown?

3. Suppose the Semi-Final Round changes its format from showdown to

face-off and the pre-determined singers were chosen to be one of
the matches. How many face-off rounds will there be?
