2. DESCRIPTION
2.1 GENERAL
The disconnectors AREVA of the series S3C (without earthing switches), S3CT (with
one earthing switch) and S3C2T (with two earthing switches) are of type with double
side-break with three insulators each pole and the central insulator is a rotary one.
The live part is made of a mobile part, the rotary arm, which holds on its two ends the
mobile male contacts, and of two fixed female contacts installed on the lateral fixed
insulators. The mobile part of the arm with the two mobile contacts is installed on the
central rotary insulator.
The fixed contacts are made of pairs of copper blades, each pressed by a stainless
steel spring, that ensure adequate and constant pressure on the contact-making
points.
The mobile contacts are made of copper plates fastened to the ends of the mobile
arms. The arms are made of very strong and highly conductive aluminum tubes.
With an 85° rotation of the central column, which holds the mobile arm, the contacts
close with a sliding movement. This contact-making is self-cleaning and self-
tightening and ensures, therefore, the best behavior in the case of stress due to
short-time current.
The number of the copper blades of the fixed contact, the size of the mobile contact
and of the tubes of the mobile arm depends on the electrical and mechanical features
of the equipment.
The copper contacts, both fixed and mobile ones, are silver-plated in the area where
current flows.
As far as the flow of current is concerned, there are only two gaps in the equipment:
in the disconnection contacts.
The line terminals are vertical pads located ad the ends of the two fixed female
contacts.
The lower support bases are in hot-galvanized steel, resistant to the heaviest stress
(stress on line terminals, stress due to short-time currents, etc.).
All components through which current flows have been standardized and
tested with short-circuit current.
The equipment is constructed in compliance with the following standards:
Italy CEI EN 62271-102;
US ANSI C37 from 30 to 37 NEMA SG 06;
UK BS EN 62271-102;
Europe IEC 62271-102.
The following text may refer to several types of equipment and, for better
understanding, the examination of the figures of this manual should be always
combined with the careful study of the installation drawing DIN-…, which concerns
your specific order.

Fasten the fixed contacts (3.0 Fig. 3) to the external insulators with the screws (3.4
Fig. 3), including plain and spring washers, and - before tightening the bolts - make
sure that:
• The fixed contacts are aligned and perpendicular to the axes of the supports
(5.5 Fig. 5);
• The contact blades (3.2 Fig. 3) are horizontal. If needed insert the special C-
washers between the upper flanges of the external insulators (1.1 Fig. 1) and
the fixed contacts (3.0 Fig. 3).
6.2.5 Vertical drive shaft and drive of the disconnector (Fig. 7, 7A)
Before carrying out the installation, check that the serial number
Important of the drive is the same as the serial number of the
disconnector.
Lift the drive; take the back of the device toward the support structure and take care
that the holes (7.11 Fig. 7) on the drive match those on the structure. Fasten
temporarily two bolts diagonally; do not tighten them.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
D0496-04-EN 13/78
With reference to Fig. 7A, measure the distance "L" between the center of the hole of
the pin (7.13 Fig. 7A), on the driving shaft of the lower base (5.1 Fig. 7A), and the
upper surface of the support (7.15 Fig. 7A) of the clamp of the drive; subtract 15 mm
from this distance. Such distance is called "La":
La=L-15 (with "L" and "La" in mm)
Measure the vertical drive shaft (7.3 Fig. 7) supplied with the disconnector and, if it is
longer than "La", cut it to the exact size and then deburr the edges and reinstate the
surface protection by cold galvanizing.
Make sure that the drive is in the OPEN position.
In order to ensure the best grip, before installing the drive shaft
of the switchgear, polish with abrasive paper the lower part of
Important the shaft for a length of about 150 mm.
Check also that the internal surface of the clamp is free from
any trace of grease or other impurities.
Remove the lower fastening bolt installed previously and, by pivoting on the other
bolt still installed, tilt the drive to permit the installation of the vertical drive shaft (7.3
Fig. 7).
Insert the top of the vertical drive shaft (7.3 Fig. 7) into the hub of the driving base
(5.1 Fig. 5) and lock it in the correct position with the lock pin and cotter pins (7.13
Fig. 7).
While keeping the drive at a slant, insert the bottom of the vertical drive shaft (7.3
Fig. 7) into the clamp (7.12 Fig. 7).
Bring back the drive to the correct position and fasten the others fastening bolts to
the support structure.
If needed, loosen the bolts that fasten the drive to the structure, raise or lower the
drive and then tighten the bolts again, in order to get - when the adjustment is
complete - the exact dimensions shown in the specific installation drawing DIN-….
Check also that the drive is horizontal in two perpendicular directions, if needed shim
the fastening devices.
Fasten temporarily the clamp (7.12 Fig. 7), but do not tighten the screws (7.10 Fig.
7).
Check that the drive shaft (7.3 Fig. 7) is vertical in the two perpendicular directions.
Now you can tighten the clamp (7.12 Fig. 7) with the screws (7.10 Fig. 7) to lock the
shaft (7.3 Fig. 7), with a torque of around 80 Nm. In order to assist in this operation,
apply some normal grease on the bolts.
6.3.1 Fixed bases (Fig. 1A, 1B, 5B, 5C, 5D, 5E)
Lift, as shown in figure A, the fixed bases (5.1, 5.2 Fig. 5B, 5D) and, after checking
that their positions are correct, in agreement with the specific installation drawing
DIN-…, lay them down onto the support structure, with the fastening holes aligned.
Fasten them temporarily.
Remove the lifting apparatus.
With the spirit level, check that all the bases, especially the rotary discs (5.7, 5.8 Fig.
5B, 5D), which support the rotary insulators (1.2 Fig. 1A, 1B), are horizontal in the
two perpendicular directions. If needed shim with the C-washers on the bolts,
between the support structure and the brackets of the bases, until the bases are
adequately level.
Before fastening them finally to the structure, check that:
• The bases are aligned between themselves and with the support structure;
• The bases are horizontal;
• During final fastening no deformation has taken place that might have altered
the adjustments already carried out. If needed repeat the operations above.

conditions. When you have achieved the required conditions, tighten the fastening
bolts. Take into account that any C-washers should be inserted as shown in Figure
2D, so that slanted supporting surfaces are created for the bolts, in order to avoid
stress to the rings of the insulators.
Finally check that the distances between the centers of the insulators are as
indicated in the installation drawing DIN-…
