ELP Goals

The English Language Program at Universidad del Norte aims to provide our students with language

texts on both concrete and abstract topics
§Express and support ideas orally and interact with fluency, accuracy, and spontaneity
§Write with coherence and accuracy in personal, professional and academic contexts on a wide

Classroom Guidelines

• Class sessions begin on the half hour. If students arrive more than 15 minutes late, they
can stay for the class, but the absence will be counted. Additionally, if students leave
class more than 15 minutes early, an absence will also be counted. Official class time is
the Colombian government’s official time, available at (http://horalegal.sic.gov.co/).
• The professor must specify one weekly office hour so the students can discuss any
particular aspect regarding the class. Students should e-mail the teacher to express any
concerns or questions, or to set up an individual meeting with the teacher.

• All electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.) should remain off and unused during
class, unless they are needed in class activities organized by the teacher.
Classroom Guidelines

The teacher will return grades timely in order to meet the due dates for their upload in
the system and provide complete feedback within this timeframe. Teachers will allow
students an immediate opportunity to review their graded materials. Students are
responsible for keeping track of their own grades, and for timely contesting of any
graded event with which they are dissatisfied for any reason.
• For students to make up any graded event, a valid excuse must be presented to the
professor. With the valid excuse, a make-up exam with no cost would be rescheduled
within ten days upon returning to class. Failure to do so will result in a zero for that
grading event. Homework and quizzes cannot be made up.
• Learning to use a language is a constant process, therefore. class attendance is
essential. If a student misses more than 20 % of class hour, he/she will not be able to
take the final exam and will receive a 0.0 dor that exam.

IMPORTANT:
• If a student has flu or covid symptoms , he /she must
report the situation immediately to the teacher
through the institutional mail . Then , the student
needs to stay at home for the period recommended by
the health authorities for these cases.
• The use of masks from both students and the teacher
is mandatory in every class, as well as all safety
protocols shared by the university.
• Plagiarism is copying someone else’s work. You
will receive a 0 on your exam or face possible
expulsion. This is very serious.
