PODCAST SCRIPT
Episode 10

-10-15 seconds intro-

MJ: Hey everybody and welcome back to another episode of...

ALL: The Weekly BTAlks (BTA Talks)!

MJ: I am Mary Jo, I will be your host...

VIADO_Podcast: Script 1
VIN: I am Arvin...

MAU: and I am Maurisette, we will be your co-hosts for today's episode.

MJ: Here we are again in another episode, episode 10, and welcome everyone who are with us
today. Grabe 'no, nalampasan na natin 'yung prelim and midterm, and finally nakatungtong na
tayo sa finals.

VIN: (any word/expression for agreeing)...and luckily, naka-9 episodes na tayo for this
whole year. Naalala ko pa 'yung unang episode to episode 5,doon natin napag-usapan 'yung
'Conventional and Alternative materials' tsaka 'yung 'Roof and floor slab system'.

MAU: (any word/expression for agreeing)...and by episode 6 to episode 8 napag-usapan natin

doon 'yung 'Prestressed Concrete' which is under that ay 'yung 'Pre-tensioning and Post-
tensioning'. Also after that, we got the chance to design and create a model of our own
designed bridge. Previously, in episode 9, we introduced the topics we will cover for the
next epiodes of our podcast series which are: Membrane Structure, Shell Structure, Pre-
engineered buildings, and Geodesic Structure. Then here we are sa pang-sampung episode which
we will cover for today is all about 'Geodesic Structure'.

MJ:(any word/expression for agreeing)... and I hope you guys will tune in because before we
end this episode, because we prepared a short game for all of you who are joining us and
s'yempre may pa-prize tayo.

VIN:(any word/expression for agreeing), kaya without further ado, mary jo, baka gusto mong
ipakilala sa audience natin 'yung guests natin for today.

MJ: Yes s'yempre, along with us is our two guests para samahan tayo and let's give them a
chance to introduce themselves.

ZY: Hi everyone, I'm Zyrel Roque or "Zy" for short...

LOVE: Hi everybody, I'm Lovely Ann Viado or call me "Love".

-Background information-
MAU: Ayan, welcome again to The Weekly BTAlks and to start our discussion, guys can you give
us an idea of what is a geodesic structure? The most basic idea about it.

LOVE: Kapag sinabi nating geodesic structure, ito kasi 'yung spherical architectonic
structures na formed by triangular elements. Basically, a geodesic dome is made out of
triangles na connected together to form a true sphere.
ZY: (any word/expression for agreeing) in addition, it is a thin shell arrangements na in a
triangle form.

VIN: Zy, nasabi mo na thin shell arrangements siya. Pagdating sa rigidity and stability, how
do you explain it? Since most of the geodesic dome diba wala kang nakikitang column, so
paano 'yung load bearing ng mga ganitong type of structure?

ZY: The reason kung bakit stable 'yung mga geodesic dome kasi it's because of they have
local triangular rigidity na dinidistribute niya 'yung stress evenly across the structure,
therefore may sturdiness 'yung dome while keeping the structure very light.

LOVE: Although hindi lang siya minsan a network of triangles, p'wede rin siyang network of
hexagons. Either way, parehas nilang prinoproject ang shape ng sphere when they are all
connected.

-History-

MJ: So, mayroong geodesic dome na made out of triangles and hexagons. Pero bago tayo lumayo-
layo sa discussion, atras tayo saglit para malaman naman natin kung saan ba nagsimula 'yung
mga ganitong geodesic dome structures. Is there a person behind this idea ba?

VIADO_Podcast: Script 2
LOVE: Yes, actually way back 1919 there is this person from Germany and kilala siya bilang
Walther Bauersfeld. He was the first person to designed a dome after the World War I and
engineer siya. It was actually for the Carl Zeiss Planetarium, ito 'yung first projection
planetarium na tinawag nilang Zeiss I model in 1923. 'Yung model na 'to nagpo-project siya
ng 4,900 stars. Later on, after 30 years, si Architect Buckminster Fuller, american
architect siya, ni-reinvent niya first geodesic dome and it became quite popular after that.

ZY: Exactly, si Fuller, siya 'yung nagbigay ng name for that dome which is the 'geodesic'.
Basically, si Bauersfeld ang nag-invent and then si Fuller 'yung naging dahilan kung bakit
naging well known 'yung idea ng geodesic dome.

MJ: Is it true ba na while Fuller reinvent the dome, ginamitan niya ng physics and
engineering principles 'yung dome para sa tension and compression?

ZY: Yes, its a fact na he developed the intrinsic mathematics of the dome which is nung 1951
he applied for a patent and by June of 1954 he received it. In that same year, he also
exhibited a carboard dome for the very first time and in-exhibit siya sa Triennale Milano.

-Structural Framework-

VIN: (expression of agreement/understanding)...so there is a two-person behind the idea of

geodesic dome. Pag-usapan naman natin 'yung structural framework ng geodesic dome. I believe
'yung ganitong type of structural framework sa dome ay space frame which a 3d framework?
Tama ba?

MAU: Yes, may nabasa rin ako about diyan na mayro'ng space frame and mayro'ng plane frame.
How you will differentiate the two types of frame? Paano ba kapag sinabing space frame and
plane frame?

LOVE: In the most basic definition and explanation, kapag sinabi kasing plane frame ito
'yung simplest form ng isang truss na made of one single triangle in a single plane. Kapag
sinabing space frame, ito 'yung three-dimensional or 3D framework or truss. Ito 'yung mga
series of linked pyramid frames na constructed from interlocking struts in a geometric
pattern katulad ng geodesic dome.

MJ: Could you explain to us guys kung paano ba nafo-form ang isang geodesic dome? The
process behind it kung paano siya nabubuo.

ZY: Generally, sa geodesic dome it uses a flat triangular formed shapes preferably by using
an equilateral triangles. Ito 'yung mga triangles with all same size.

VIN: So how many triangles do you need para makabuo ng isang geodesic dome?

ZY: Mayro'n kasing three mathematical forms for this, from using an equilateral triangles,
ito 'yung tetrahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron.

LOVE: Yes, and each form iba-iba silang ng number of faces, edges, tsaka vertices. Sa
tetrahedron, mayro'n siyang 4 faces, 6 edges and 4 vertices. Lahat ng face no'n triangle
even its base. Sa octahedron, may 8 faces siya, 12 edges, and 6 vertices. While in
icosahedron, it has 20 equilateral triangles faces, 30 edges, and 12 vertices. Therefore,
the more na meron siyang maraming faces, the more it is similar to a sphere. So, para
makabuo ka ng isang geodesic dome, the triangles in an icosahedron ay subdivided by
splitting the edges of the triangles and from the new split of edges makakabuo ka ng more
triangles.
VIN: Kumbaga the more na maraming subdivisions which is maraming triangles, mas mukha itong
sphere or dome?

LOVE: Yes and the more complex siya s'yempre.

VIADO_Podcast: Script 3
MAU: How about in terms of materials? Ano 'yung madalas na ginagamit for this type of
structure?

ZY: Pagdating naman sa materials 'yung ginagamit sa framing ay mga triangular panels na made
out of timber, plastic or PVC, or even galvanized steels. Pero the most common material na
ginagamit talaga ay aluminum and steel para sa framing talaga since they connect the network
of the beams or struts together. Madalas ginagamit 'yung aluminum and steel sa mga larger
and permanent structures while, 'yung mas magaan na materials s'yempre sa simple and movable
structures sila ina-apply.

LOVE: Absolutely, and bukod sa framing may mga materials for covering the triangular panels.
We have ETFE foil for light structures, ito 'yung thin film na translucent sheet. Ito minsan
'yung alternative to glass and hard plastics. Then, for large dome buildings, ginagamit dito
'yung plexiglas panels. It is lightweight and shatter resistant and also, an alternative to
glass din siya.

MJ: That was very informative and na-enlighten ako doon about sa specific type of materials
na ginagamit for geodesic dome kasi diba usually alam natin 'yung itsura nung material pero
hindi natin alam 'yung tawag doon. So, since napag-usapan na natin 'yung origin, form, and
materials for a geodesic structure, lets talk about naman 'yung mga existing geodesic dome

-sample work-

VIN: Oo nga, alam niyo ba guys 'yung nasa Canada? Nabasa ko may dinesign doon si Architect
Buckminster Fuller na geodesic dome.

MAU: Yes I think, it is for the 1967 World Fair Exposition?

LOVE: Yes, actually it was called "Montreal Biosphere" and tinayo siya to function as
American's pavilion sa isang event.

ZY: That's true and the dome itself is constructed with a steel skeleton while 'yung ginamit
na material as covering ay acrylic, to be specific 1,900 of acrylic panels. 'Yung dome na
'yon hindi lang siya 'yung typical na half-dome 'yung dinesign but instead they went for a
full two-thirds sphere.

MJ: Actually, sabi nga nila 'yung dome raw ay jewel-like design nga dahil sa steel frame
nung structure and what is great about this structure na-withstand niya raw 'yung major
fires and ice storms given na tinayo pa siya nung 1967. Although, may time na nag-closed
siya for over 15 years dahil sa sunog and for another 5 months dahil naman sa ice storm.

VIN: But despite of those unfortunate events diba, naging sturdy pa rin siya tsaka naging
landmark siya, and eventually naging tourist spot for locals and tourists. And to this day,
I believe the biosphere is devoted na for the purpose of educating visitors on major
environmental issues.
-advantages & disadvantages-

MAU: Exactly, proving na a dome structure can be very stable and rigid talaga just like any
other structure. In fact, we can see here na may disadvantage 'yung dome structure
especially when it comes on safety 'no? Just like what you mentioned earlier Jo, na nasunog
na once 'yung Montreal Biosphere.

ZY: Yes, tama ka diyan. May advantages and disadvantages pa rin 'yung mga ganitong type of
structure. One of the many disadvantages nga ay 'yung problem sa fire escapes, it could be
an issue lalo na kapag sa building permit and meeting building code requirements.

VIN: Nag-a-agree rin ba kayo guys, another disadvantage na naisip ko sa dome ay 'yung design
ng doors and windows kasi diba, 'yung typical door kung iisipin mo sa dome-shaped structure,
hindi siya fit.

VIADO_Podcast: Script 4
MJ: Oo nga, most probably custom-make 'yung mga doors and windows doon which is magastos.

MAU: And also, talk about space, marami ring unusable space inside a dome structure. Pero
setting aside 'yung mga disadvantages, kung titignan natin may advantages din naman ang dome
especially when it comes to materials kasi 'yung mga available and preferable materials ay
environmentally friendly and less materials 'yung gagamitin.

VIN: Oo, tsaka in regards to financial matter, hindi siya gano'n kamahal pagdating sa
framing and durable siya kaso 'yun nga lang magastos sa part na custom-make 'yung mga ibang
building components.

LOVE: I agree, tsaka resistant to natural elements din siya diba just like how Montreal
Biosphere prove na it can withstand ice storms knowing na ilang taon na 'yung dome.

All: (word/expression for agreeing) (ad lib)

MJ: And I think that's a wrap for this episode. Thank you guys for being our guests for
today and for sharing your knowledge all about geodesic structure with us.

ZY/LOVE: (comment something)

MAU: And once again, thank you so much for our guests. We hope nakinig and may natandaan
