QUESTION BANK
Time: 2 Hours Max. Marks: 60

UNIT- I
I. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it: 5x1=5
(Choose any one passage, 5 questions on the passage, each carrying 1 mark)
1. Information is stored in audio/video tapes by magnetising them. These tapes are actually
long, thin plastic films coated with a magnetic material, mainly iron oxide.

Likewise, the player has a recording head which consists of a coil of a wire wound around
a circular piece of iron with a small gap. Any current passing through the wire would
produce a magnetic field around it.

Information (voice or image or any data) to be stored is converted into electric signals (by
a microphone) amplified and fed to the recorder head. As the current varies in accordance
with the image or sound (input signals) to be recorded, it produces a varyıng magnetic
field.

When the tape is run through the small gap present in the recording head, the varying
magnetic field magnetises the particles on the tape rearranged their moments in
accordance with the variation in the input signal.

To reproduce the Signal recorded, the tape is again run past the recording/playing head
which senses the magnetic field along the tape. This induces a varying current in the coil.
This current is amplified and fed to the speaker or TV to reproduce the original message.

a) How is information stored in audio/video tapes?

b) How does a wire produce magnetic field?
c) How is the information fed to the recorder?
d) How does the tape reproduce the recorded signal?
e) Information is converted into_____.

2. Clouds are masses of tiny water droplets and ice crystals that float in the air. As such they
do not have any colour. But some look white and some grey. Some change shape
continuously as parts of the cloud evaporate when they come into contact with the warmer
air.
Clouds are classified mainly by their appearance dimension, shape structure and texture.
While stratus clouds are sheet-like, fair weather cumulus clouds consist of piled-up masses
of dazzlingly white clouds. They are made of water droplets. Cirrus clouds are curly white
made of ice crystals at higher altitudes. In these clouds, water droplets or ice crystals are
loosely packed and so light can pass through them without much loss in intensity.
Some of the clouds which cause rain are the stratus and stratocumulus clouds which are
near-earth clouds. Stratocumulus clouds are not as thick as stratus clouds and so they have
light and dark areas.
Altostratus clouds form smooth white or grey sheets across the sky. Sometimes these
clouds are so thick that the Sun or the Moon cannot be seen through it. At times the
difference in thickness may cause relatively light patches between dark parts but the
surface of the clouds do not show any relief.
Nimbostratus are low, amorphous and occur at higher altitudes. These are dark, grey and
uniform. Cumulonimbus are the main rain clouds which are black. This is because light
cannot penetrate through them as they are deep and densely packed with water droplets,
ice and snow particles.
If we look from an aircraft, flying at high altitudes, these clouds will look dazzlingly
white, as they reflect all the light falling on them. But for an observer on the ground the
clouds may look black and be raining. Clouds are thus white and black at the same time!

a) Why do some clouds change shape?

b) How are clouds classified?
c) What are Cirrus clouds?
d) How do Altostratus clouds block the sun and the moon?
e) Why do clouds look dazzling white when viewed from high altitudes?

3. Our eyes are lubricated by tears that are produced by glands around the eye.\
There are two types of tears: moisturising tears and reflex tears Moisturising tears are
produced continuously, while reflex tears are produced in response to irritation or emotion.
Dry eye syndrome is a condition in which production of moisturising tears is dramatically
reduced, making the eyes feel scratchy and look red. When the eyes become irritated,
some people experience reflex tearing, which is why tearing can also be a symptom of dry
eye syndrome. In addition, people with dry eyes sometimes find they can no longer
comfortably wear contact lenses. There are many possible causes of dry eyes. The most
common cause is age, because production of moisturizing tears decreases as people grow
older. In women, hormonal changes- especially those associated with pregnancy or
menopause - can result in dry eyes. Environmental irritants may also play a role. The
treatment is lubrication.
There area number of excellent "artificial tear" products that should be used according to
your doctor's recommendation. If lubrication doesn't relieve the problem, a punctual plug
can be used.
This is a tiny plastic device that fits snugly in the duct that drains tears from the eye into
the nose. This plug prevents the tears from draining increasing the level of moisturizing
tears in the eye. I haven't heard of any research suggesting that air purifiers are beneficial
for people with dry eye syndrome. Air humidifiers, on the other hand, appear to help. It's
also important to protect the eyes from strong air currents, such as those produced by
overhead fans or automobile air vents. Finally, be sure to tell your doctor about all the
medications you are taking because some drugs, such as antihistamines, may aggravate dry
eye.

a) When do eyes produce reflect tears?

b) What is dry eye syndrome?
c) Mention any one symptom of dry eye syndrome.
d) What is a punctual plug?
e) Are air purifiers helpful for people with dry eye syndrome?

4. The rings around Saturn were first identified by astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610. It was,
however, Dutch Physicist Christian Huygens, who in 1659, recognised them as a broad,
flat, thin ring, separated from the body of the plant.
In 1675, the Italian Astronomer G.D. Cassini identified two rings around it. Until 1969, it
was believed that there were just three rings around Saturn "A", "B", and "C" and 151; "A"
being the outermost and "C", close and to the planet. In 1969, the fourth ring was
discovered by Pierre Guoria and soon, another one was also identified.
Pioneer satellite Data (1971) had indicated that there was one more ring ("F"). French
Astronomer, Edourd Albert Roche in 1849 postulated that the rings were the remnants of a
satellite that strayed too close to Saturn and due to which reason, disintegrated. His theory
was that, if a satellite approaches its primary, closer than a certain distance (known as
"Roche Limit" & 151 2.44 times the radius of the planet), the satellite would break up and
the broken pieces would gradually get distributed around the planet in a circular path.
The distance of the rings of Saturn are within the "Roche limit". This would suggest that
the rings are the remnants of a disintegrated satellite only.
The present thinking is that the rings are made up of countless small objects (varying in
size from very small grains to small chunks of rocky material, covered by ice) and that
each revolves around Saturn in its own orbit like a satellite.
That the rings contain particulate matter has been confirmed by the fact that Rings "A" and
"C" exhibit certain transparency due to which, the body of Saturn could be seen through
them, as also the light from the stars.
Furthermore, the satellite of Saturn are not completely eclipsed too, when they pass into
the shadow of the rings. Very little information is available as to the precise composition
of the matter in the rings. As per the observations of C.P. Kupier (1952), the Infra Red
Spectrum is similar to the reflection spectrum of hoar-frost.
It is quite likely that these particles must have been of much bigger size earlier (even some
metres in diameter), but these might have been a continuous reduction in their sizes due to
their abrasion with objects like the meteoroids. Scientists are of the view that the
continuous erosion may ultimately (at a far distant future) result in the rings slowly
vanishing for ever!

a) Who discovered the rings of the Saturn for the first time?
b) What did Christian Huygens recognize about rings of Saturn?
c) Who discovered the fourth ring around Saturn and when?
d) What did Edourd Albert Roche postulate about Saturn’s rings?
e) What are the observations of C.P. Kupier?
