Bob Marley

Bob Marley was born in Jamaica in 1945. His mother was Jamaican and his father was a
British Marine officer. Bob dreamed of being a singer and his first recorded song “Judge
Not” was released when he was 16 years old. In 1965 he formed a group called the
“Wailers”. His music was famous in the Caribbean and by 1976 his reggae music became
famous in the United States and then Europe. Bob and his group won many awards for their
music. Bob was a follower of the Rastafarian religion and much of his music was influenced
by his Rastafarian beliefs. Bob Marley’s musical hits included “No Woman No Cry - I Shot
the Sheriff - Don’t Worry Be Happy – Redemption song – Three Little Birds – Sun is
Shining “ and many more.

Bob Marley promoted peace and equality. In 1976 Bob was scheduled to sing following a
presidential candidate’s election rally. That candidate was not a friend a friend of the
United States government. Many people believe that the United States government tried
to have Bob Marley assassinated because he had the power to influence voters. Gunmen
broke into Bob Marley’s home and shot him twice but he survived and Bob Marley sung at
the rally. Because of Bob Marley’s peace efforts, he received the Peace Medal of the
third world nations from the United Nations.

In 1977 Bob Marley was diagnosed with cancer of the toe. His doctor wanted to amputate
the toe but that was against Bob Marley’s religious beliefs. As a result the cancer spread
through Bob Marley’s body and into his organs. Bob Marley died on May 11 th, 1985 at the
age of 36. After his death he received Jamaica’s Order of Merit.
Bob Marley is a legend in the music industry and will always be remembered for his
contribution to “Reggae Music”. Bob was married and had three children with his wife. He
had 10 children with other partners.
