ME 501 - ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS

Credits, contact hours and classrooms:

(3+0+0) 3 Credits Tuesday 15:00-16:00 (Zoom); Thursday 10:00-12:00 (Zoom)
Instructor: Nuri Ersoy
E-mail: nuri.ersoy@boun.edu.tr
Office hour: TBA
Textbook: Advanced Engineering Mathematics, 2nd Edition, by M.D. Greenberg (Prentice Hall, 1998)
Specific course information:
Course Description: Systems of linear equations; linear vector spaces; theory of matrices and the eigenvalue
problem; multivariable differential calculus; ordinary differential equations; vectors in R3; vector field theory,
Fourier series and Fourier transform; Laplace transform; calculus of variations.
Course Web Page: All homework, homework solutions, grades, and announcements will be available via
Moodle: https://moodle.boun.edu.tr/
Specific goals for the course: The objective is to provide a sound foundation in more advanced areas of
mathematics of most relevance to engineering. At the end of the course students should be able to apply
analytical techniques to solve a range of problems and to understand their applications in a variety of
engineering situations.
Grading and policies: One Midterm 25%; Five Homework 5% each; Final 50%
Exams are closed book and closed notes.
If you miss a midterm and have a valid excuse, you need to notify me immediately. Then, you will be given an
extra question in the final exam. The overall grade that you get from that exam will be used in your final and the
missed midterm exam.
Absolutely no extensions will be granted for the due dates of the collected assignments. Even though team-work
efforts are encouraged, they must not go beyond discussions on the solution methods used and/or cross-checking
your results. You will have to face with all consequences of handing in solutions, which are duplicates of others.
You are expected to attend all on-line lectures via Zoom at the assigned hour.
