Topic: THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE


SHOPPING

Objectives:
- to read for gist
- to discuss and list the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping
versus high street shopping
- to use the Internet as a search tool
- to explore an online shop and carry out a survey for customers

Activity 1 –brainstorming (5 min)


Aim: - to introduce the topic: Online Shopping
Procedure:
T writes ONLINE SHOPPING on the whiteboard and elicits words or phrases
related to the topic.
T draws a spider gram based on the answers provided.

Activity 2 (10 min)


Aim: to read a fragment for gist and discuss the main ideas.
Procedure:
T asks sts what they associate eMag with. Expected answers: consumer
electronics, IT products, Do It Yourself, videos, etc.
T asks sts to read the short fragment which was extracted from an online article
and decide on the main ideas and purpose of the article:
eMag, the biggest online store in Romania, started marketing cosmetics
on Monday belonging to brands such as L’oreal, Tigi, Opi or Disney,
according to the company’s blog.
“Today we are launching, through the medium of Marketplace, our
section of cosmetics on eMag.ro, which gathers together a number of
1500 professional skin-care products, used in hair and beauty salons.
Here you will find a range of products from Tigi or Keratesse hairstyling
products to Joico or Loreal hair care products, OPI manicure products
or Bruno Vassari or Mario Badescu cosmetic treatments”, as confirmed
by company officials. The company markets online IT products and
consumer electronics, holiday packages, DIY, books, music and films.
eMag registered in 2011 a turnover of 145 mil. Euro, on the increase by
42% compared to previous year. Last year eMag was purchased by
Naspers.

The answers may vary, so sts will have to give supporting arguments.
Possible answers: multiple online stores hosted by the same platform, big names in
commerce expand the online business, big companies take over successful smaller
businesses, etc.

Activity 3 (15 min)


Aim: to practice collaborative speaking and to list positive and negative aspects of
the proposed topic
T forms 3 pairs and allows them 5 min to talk about the advantages and
disadvantages of online shopping versus shopping in high street stores. At the end
of the task, each pair will present the results of the conversation and fill in the
following table:

Activity 4 (20 minutes)


Aims:
- to use the Internet as a search tool
- to explore an online shop and carry out a survey for customers
Procedure:
T provides each pair with an online shopping site and allows sts 3 minutes to
explore it:

T asks sts to devise a survey (5 questions) to be addressed to customers for a future
improvement of the site. On completion of the task everyone will express personal
opinions regarding the possible effects of the survey.
