Proposed Topic/Title Motivation and Factors Affecting the Academic
Performance of Students in The New Normal
Motivation of the Researcher The closure of schools due to the threat of
the pandemic has given way to the adoption of
new learning modalities which fall under distance
learning. Learners who were used to having
classes face to face were deeply affected since
there is an obvious limit on their access to
perform their best. Through this, shedding light on
their drive and the factors that affect their
academic performance is a good way to better
help the system in its transition to the new norm
in education. The researcher is motivated to dwell
on the students’ points and views on the said topic
to serve as the focus of the study.
Research Gap Important factors that affect the academic
performance of students were studied on relevant
pieces of literature. The study of Ismael (2018)
focused on identifying the most important and
significant factors in two different areas of
learning: combined and traditional learning.
Several critical issues have not yet been resolved
to achieve the full potential of the learning
outcomes in the two domains. Another concern
that is not yet discovered is about the factors that
affect the motivation of students in their academic
performance in the time of the pandemic. Certain
studies were also dwelling on the technology-
based or online modes of learning but few on the
blended learning. This has given way for the
researcher to pursue a study that is proof that even
in this transition in the learning mode, it is still
learner-centered and adapting to the needs of
learners.
Statement of the Problem The study aims to assess the motivation and
factors affecting the academic performance of
Grade 7 learners at Lubao National High School –
Lubao Pampanga, School Year 2021-2022.
Specifically, it seeks answers to the following
questions:
1. How may the academic performance of
the respondents be described in terms of:
1.1 quizzes;
1.2 activities;
1.3 performance tasks; and
1.4 examinations
2. How may the motivation and factors
affecting the academic performance of the
respondents be described in terms of:
2.1 quizzes;
2.2 activities;
2.3 performance tasks; and
2.4 examinations
3. Is there a significant relationship between
the students’ motivation and the identified
factors and their academic performance?
4. What interventions may be proposed to
better improve the academic performance
of learners in this new normal.
Research Design Creswell (2013) noted that quantitative
research is the process of collecting, analyzing,
interpreting, and writing the results of a study.
The foregoing research will use a descriptive
research design. It will systematically obtain
information to describe the situation of the
respondents in the study; the motivation, and
factors affecting the academic performance of the
learners in the new normal.
Respondents/ Participants A certain number of students from the
Grade 7 in a public high school in Lubao,
Pampanga will be the respondents of the study.
Coming from a transition from elementary, and
while there is also a transition in the system of
education, especially in basic education, the
researcher decided to choose this grade level.
