The Origin of Banyuwangi

The island of Java was ruled by a king long ago. The king had a loyal Prime Minister
named Sidapaksa. This is a story about prime minister Sidapaksa. Sidapaksa’s wife was very
beautiful and he loved her very much. But unfortunately Sidapaksa’s mother did not like his
wife.
One day, Sidapaksa’s mother asked the King to send her son to a faraway place. With the
condition that his son was gone, she had the opportunity to get rid of her son’s wife. Of
course, she didn’t tell the King about it.
The king, who did not know Sidapaksa’s mother evil plan, agreed to the request. So he
gave Sidapaksa the task. “Go to Mount Ijen. There grows a flower that can make a woman
beautiful. Get the flowers for the Queen,” said the King. Sidapaksa came home sadly. He
told his wife about the duties from the King. “I can’t leave you alone. Especially when you
will give birth to our child,” said Sidapaksa. “Do not worry about me. I can take care of
myself.” Answered his wife. The next day, Sidapaksa went to Mount Ijen. It was a long and
arduous journey. A few days after Sidapaksa left, his wife gave birth to a handsome baby
boy. She is very proud of her baby.
One day, Sidapaksa’s wife went to the spring. Sidapaksa’s mother took the baby away.
She threw the baby in the river. Sidapaksa’s wife was shocked when she couldn’t find her
baby. “Where’s my baby?” she cries. She looked for her son but she couldn’t find him.
Eventually she fell ill from not eating or drinking. She became thin and weak day by day.
After two years, Sidapaksa returned. He couldn’t wait to see his wife and child. His
mother saw him at the gate. He said to him, “My son, your wife is a bad woman. She killed
her own baby and she threw your son into the river.” Sidapaksa was very angry to hear that.
He didn’t believe anything his wife said. He was very angry and he was going to kill his wife.
Unfortunately his wife said, “I’m so sad that you don’t believe me. You don’t have to kill me.
Because I’m going to die soon.” Then she ran to a nearby river. Before the current of the
river carried her away, she said, “My dear husband, if a good smell comes out of this river,
then I am innocent.”
A miracle happened. From the river comes a fragrant smell. In the middle of the river
came out two beautiful flowers. Big and small flowers. The little flower said, “Father, I am
your son. My mother is innocent. Grandma threw me into the river.” Sidapaksa shouted
loudly. He regretted what he did to his wife. But it’s too late. His wife and child turned into
two flowers. The smelly and dirty river turned into a clear and fragrant river. In Javanese it is
called Banyuwangi. It means fragrant river. The land around the fragrant river is now known
as Banyuwangi, a city in East Java.
