CASE STUDY (GENDER SENSITIVITY)

Xia is a Certified Public Account in a well -known company. She is a fresh graduate and
just passed the board exam, for that reason she has no experience in the world of working in her
profession. Eventually, the company hired newly board passers, one of the newly hired
employees is Samuel, who is also a fresh graduate.
Because they are new, they are still being guided by the top employees of their company.
Their first job is to audit the financial statements of the company, since it is applicable to their
degree and they have both experience on that field during their internship program. First, they
were familiarized on the files and documents they need to evaluate and introduce into other
employees, so that whenever they need help, they can ask them anytime.
While they were being taught, Xia noticed that when it comes to her colleague Samuel,
their senior accountant would teach in detail but when it came to her, it was very general. She
just let it passed. On the following days, as they were being taught by their senior, she noticed
that their senior was more focused on teaching his colleague, Samuel for that reason Samuel is
getting his job done and look so knowledgeable about his work, on the other hand Xia who still
knows very little about how she should do her job, this makes her worried to her job since their
work is very sensitive. So, she dared to ask their senior why he was treating and teaching better
Samuel better than her. Her senior's answer was "Women should only focus on balancing the
account balances of financial statements, they are critical in the place of audit". Xia just calmed
down and didn't answer her senior. Months later, Samuel was immediately promoted because of
his work ethic. While, Xia just remained on her position. Whether Xia wants to fight for her
rights as a woman and as an employee she is afraid of losing her job because she is the only one
her family expects.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

1. In your opinion, did their senior accountant treat Xia right?
2. Should Xia fight for her rights as a woman and employee? Explain.

COURSE/S OF ACTION:

1. The treatment of senior accountant to Xia is not right, it is a way of discrimination to the
employee. Whenever there are newly hired employees, he/she must teach them equally so
that they will learn fast and be familiarized on their work. Also, it will be an opportunity
to the employees to discover new skills and talents during their work, and this is a big
advantage to the company as it will benefit the company and the employees themselves.
2. Yes, Xia must fight for her right as an employee, because she deserves to know the
detailed work as an auditor, as it will be a great help to the company. Also, being a
woman is not a general condition to become an auditor, as all employees have unique
skills and talents that may be able to develop and can influence other employees too.
SOLUTION AND RECOMMENDATION:
1. The administration, especially the HR must ensure that all newly hired employees have
given an equal training and assistance during their first week of work, to ensure that they
had given equal chance to participate in the work. Also, they must ensure that the senior
who will give training and teach newly hired employees will be a just person, who is
responsive to the needs of the employees and guide them fairly during their work. This is
a stepping stone to the company, to make a competitive employee who may able to work
efficiently and effectively.
2. Discrimination often happens at work; this is because the dominant factor of the
population. However, this should not tolerate the situation, instead the company should
securely have a fair treatment to all of its employees whether they are male or female,
young or old, board passers or not board passers, this is to give equal chance to improve,
enhance skills, and to cope up with the work. Not all people have the same level of
progress, hence, they must wait newly hired employees to explore to be able to show
their capabilities and skills that might give a positive impact to the company.
