Write a one paragraph

SHORT  reaction or reflection on “Simbahan at Pulitika”.

The documentary “Simbahan at Pulitika” talks about the concept of separation between

the church and state specifically here in the Philippines. For me initially, I believed that the

Church should not be involved in the realm of politics because I did not think that they should

co-exist together because of their different ideologies and principles. However, the video

enlightened me that it is impossible to separate them completely because the Church also have

their significant roles when it comes to political and social issues of the country. One of the

important things discussed in the documentary is the Second Vatican Council which opened the

eyes of the Church regarding pastoral matters enabling them to help people fight for their

freedom, justice, and truth. With this, I do think that they also have the right to meddle with the

state but in a right way wherein they promote peace and harmony within the state. Overall, I

agree that the Church and State is inseparable, and that Church should have its stand if the

issues held by the State involves the faith and morality of people.

2AR-6 Week 4 – Lesson2 Research

1. What are the Four Mendicant Orders of the Church? Why they are called
mendicant order?

The Four Mendicant Orders of the Church are the Dominicans, Franciscans,
Augustinians, and Carmelites. They are called this because the word “mendicant” is a
Latin word meaning “to beg” which reflects their role of adopting lifestyle of poverty,
enouncing property, and traveling the world to preach especially to the poor. Their
survival is dependent upon the good will of their listeners (Labbat and Appleyard, 2004).

2. Did the Mendicant Orders live-up the gospel values?

Yes the live up the gospel values because taking a vow of poverty shows
courage, compassion, service, responsibility and other values taught in the Gospels
since they basically offer their lives in order to serve other people especially those in
need.

3. How did they (Mendicant Orders) endeavor to continue the social mission
endowed by Christ to the Church?

They continue the social mission endowed by Christ to the Church by preaching
and evangelization of the poor and to do that they adopt their way of life, travel around
the world, and live in some urban areas. They abandoned their property including land,
buildings, and other wealth. Their maxim was “non sibi soli vivere sed et aliis proficere”
which means “not to live for themselves only, but to serve others”. The orders proved
that it was possible to live evangelical poverty, the truth of the Gospel as such, without
being separated from the Church. In their mission of spreading the Gospel they believed
that to be a mirror reflecting divine love, one must first live what one proclaims.

2AR-6 Week 4 – Lesson 2 Analysis

1. How did the Early Christians instruct one another on social involvement?

The early Christian instruct one another on social involvement by following the
examples of Christ. Their endeavors include establishing unity and solidarity among one
another as well as practicing their duties of giving. They also referred to the deposits of
piety according to Tertullian to feed the needy, support the youth, care for the aged, and
relieve the shipwrecked.

2. Explain the stand of the Church on the two emerging modern ideologies
(capitalism and Socialism)?

A social encyclical was written because of the social conditions brought by the
Industrial Revolution as well as the two competing ideologies of Capitalism and
Socialism. This encyclical is the Rerum Novarum by Pope Leo XIII which talked about
the Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor. Here, Pope Leo XIII saw socialism as
fundamentally flawed, for it violates individual’s freedom and usurps the person’s natural,
God-given rights. With capitalism on one hand, it is believed that it is only true for the
rich and able members of the society since and does not promote the common good.
The Catholic social doctrine emphasized human freedom, charity and love of neighbor
which provides a way forward between socialism in its many guises and unfettered
capitalism. The Church highlighted the dual aspects of the right to own and the duty to
share and that people should use their God-given talents to the fullest and assist others
with the fruits of his accomplishments.

2AR-6 Week 4 – Lesson 2 Action

Do I accept the authority of the Church in social matters? (short, one paragraph reflection)
I accept the authority of the Church in social matters because I believe that they have

this high influence in the society and that they will never detach to the idea of common good

whenever they make judgements. It is their role to promote peace and harmony as well as

morality that is why they should use their voice if these are neglected by others especially, by

the state. Also, as a citizen living in a country based on religion, I think that their opinion matters

as long as they don’t impose their ideologies to everyone since we all don’t have the same

religion. Their voices could really be a big help to open the eyes of the people to the

immoralities present in our society.
