PE 103 – Swimming

Worksheet 4

1. How important a complete set of facilities before starting to swim in a pool?

- A complete set of facilities is important before starting to swim in a pool because safety is
the first priority in swimming and without a complete set of facilities, dangers and accidents
could arise and since we are dealing with water, we must make sure that all facilities are in
order, properly working and in good condition to make sure that swimmers enjoy their
leisure time as well as their safety in and out of the water. Wet floors are most common
cause of accidents that occur near the pool and to ensure safety, deck mounted handrails
and other railings must be secured in order for swimmers to have support. When swimmers
get immerse or getting out of the water, they support also from handrails since water is
slippery. Complete set of facilities are not just for safety only but also for swimmers own
learning. Having diving boards, starting platforms enables them to practice their skills and
improve their swimming. A pool equipped with complete set of facilities gives an impact to
the swimmers since their safety and enjoyment relies on it.
2. What is the purpose of this? This is a kind of buoy in a swimming pool.
- Swimming pool lane ropes (lane ropes) are used to mark off the individual lanes; it can be
seen mostly in swimming competitions. It keeps swimmers in their own are of the pool to
reduce the risk of collision or interfering with someone else’s swimming and to know exactly
where they are in the pool at any given time. Lane ropes has anti-turbulence purpose also.
This would result in a less resistance swim for swimmers in adjacent lanes. They are
designed in a way to dissipate the waves created by a swimmer, as such creating an
optimum water environment for a competitor.
