Impact of Globalization on Nations and States

Globalization can be associated with the disappearance and reduction of
economic, political, and cultural barriers between nation-states. It has opened doors for
different opportunities to the citizens of a state and has welcomed cultural diversity.
However, it results not only a positive outcome but a negative as well. The development
of nation-states dictates and is dictated by the process of globalization. Whatever future
it holds is shaped by the process which it accepted and integrated. Globalization, as a
process that reduces barriers between nation-states, entails positive and negative
effects on economic growth, political stability, and cultural modifications of nations and
states.

Globalization is believed to have slowly caused a state to lose its statehood and
a nation to lose its people. The intensified interdependencies of states have paved the
way for the opening of multinational corporations. It has opened many job opportunities
to the citizens of a country which consequently boosted the country’s economy.
However, globalization also led to secularization which reduces man to mere machines
of production of goods or services. The story behind the efficiency of workers which
drives a country’s economy up leads some to believe that they are not compensated
well for their work. And since these workers are the ones in need, they have no choice
but to accept whatever is given just so they can provide for themselves the basic
commodities of life. The people who makes up the nation are overworked to live up to
the concept of efficiency and capitalism that is usually associated with globalization.
Market deregulation led to more economic institutions which offer jobs to be set up. It
also led to scientific and technological advancement, which brought about cheap travel.
This allows people to cross from country to country with relative ease. The transnational
mobility of people has led to the idea of “end of territories,” and “erosion of sovereignty,”
which are two elements of statehood.

Cheap travel, paired with the job opportunities outside different countries led
people to migrate for work or settlement, wherein then they assimilate with other
cultures. Globalization pushed nations to welcome other cultures, which causes a nation
to slowly lose its own identity down the line.

Globalization has changed the way politics run in the contemporary world. The
increase of connectedness between societies changed the way nation-states deal with
one another. Nation-states are naturally dependent on themselves for different
resources. However, in cases wherein raw materials are not readily available, the
country taps other nation-states. It is where politics play an important role in allowing
these interactions between countries. Exercising this power for the common good leads
to political stability, and intensified interconnections between nation-states.

In the globalized world, the nation-states are believed to have lost its relevance.
Its powers are lost along with the borders that divide them. The sense of
interdependence brought about by this process could create an imbalance of power
among nations or different economic scale. Economic institutions have become the
major players that dictates the fate of a state. They are observed to be what drives and
keeps the dynamics between countries, which says much about the real power of the
government in the contemporary world. In conclusion, globalization affects the
economic, political, and cultural aspects of nation-states both positively and negatively,
and it is up to the people which road to take.
