The earliest means for mass communications can be traced back to the invention of the printing press. It allowed for the mass production of newspapers and books assisting the development of the society through an informed public opinion. Then came the telephone and radio communications technology which is capable of transmitting messages through electrical signals and electromagnetic waves. This amplified the global dissemination of news and information beyond traditional boundaries, bringing global information to the locality and vice-versa. The invention of the television was a breakthrough as it is capable of transmitting audio-visual messages. It allowed the flow of information within and between countries through news broadcasts, film, entertainment and education programs. Convergence of technologies allowed people to do different tasks efficiently however some are increasingly becoming indolent. Social media facilitates cultural exchanges and faster communications, and it is an avenue for people to use creatively according to their own needs.
