In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the Time Table), this portion
gives further specific details regarding the course.
1. Course Description
Application of principles of Chem. Engg. to the selection and design of equipment for Chemical
industries; design, cost estimation and selection of process equipment; piping, pressure
vessels, heat exchangers, distillation columns etc. Use of computer software packages in the
design; plant safety practices; use of codes.
This course deals with the application of chemical engineering principles to the selection
and design of equipment for chemical process industries.
The primary objective is teach important technical fundamentals for design, selection, and
cost estimation of process equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, distillation
columns, etc.
This course also teaches the application of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to
design the process equipment.
This course also teaches the process hazards, safety measures, safety measures in
equipment design, and design of pressure relief devices.

construction.
6. Evaluation Scheme:
Recognize various aspects involved in designing the equipment used in chemical industries,
including the mechanical aspects.
Understand the design codes, choice and criteria for material of construction, corrosion,
and corrosion prevention.
Design pressure vessels, storage vessels, heat exchangers, distillation columns.
Design process equipment using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
Course Policy:
Mid Semester Test and Comprehensive Examination are according to the Evaluation
Scheme given in the Course Handout.
If the student is unable to appear for the Regular Test/Examination due to genuine
exigencies, the student must refer to the procedure for applying for Make-up
Test/Examination (see Academic Regulations-2015). The request for the make-ups must be
made in writing with a proper and reason. Instructor may grant Make-up for only genuine
cases. The decision of the instructor-in- charge in all matters of make-up shall be final (Sec.
4.07, Academic Regulations-2015)
_
Assignments are due by 5 PM on the deadline. Late submissions are not allowed.
Quizzes will be conducted during the lectures. There are no make-ups for quizzes.
Design Projects:
Each student has to design an equipment using CAD software, simulate a model and write a
report.
The deadline for the report will be announced in the class.
Further guidance will be provided during the lectures.
No reference material of any kind will be permitted inside the exam hall.
Use of any printed / written reference material (books and notebooks) will be permitted inside the
exam hall. Loose sheets of paper will not be permitted. Computers, smartphones, tablets or
devices of any kind will not be allowed inside the exam hall. Use of calculators will be allowed in all
exams. No exchange of any material will be allowed.
