Leonardo Da Vinci (1452–1519) Renaissance


painter, scientist, inventor, and more. Da Vinci is
one of most famous painters in the world for his
iconic Mona Lisa and Last Supper.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890). Dutch post-


impressionist painter. Famous paintings
include; Sunflowers, The Starry night, and Cafe
Terrace at Night.

Rembrandt (1606–1669) Dutch Master. One of


the greatest painters, admired for his vivid
realism. Famous paintings include The Jewish
Bride and The Storm of the Sea of Galilee.

Michelangelo (1475–1564) Renaissance sculptor,


painter and architect. Famous paintings include
his epic ceiling mural on the Sistine Chapel.

Claude Monet (1840–1926) French impressionist


painter. Famous paintings
include Waterlilies, Women in Garden,
and Impression Sunrise.

Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Spanish, modern


‘cubist’ painter. Famous works
include Guernica and Bird of Peace.

August Renoir (1841–1919) French painter, one


of the early pioneers of impressionism. Also
influenced by Italian renaissance. Famous works
include Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette and On
the Terrace.

Jan Vermeer (1632–1675) Dutch painter who


specialised in genre painting – vivid depictions of
still life. Famous paintings include View of Delft,
Girl With a Pearl Earring, and The Milkmaid.
Paul Cezanne (1839–1906) French post-
impressionist painter. Famous paintings
include; The Card Players and Still Life with a
Curtain.

Paul Klee (1879-1940) – In a period of artistic


revolutions and innovations, few artists were as
crucial as Paul Klee. His studies of color, widely
taught at the Bauhaus, are unique among all the
artists of his time
Tommaso Masaccto (1401-1428) – Masaccio
was one of the first old masters to use the laws of
scientific perspective in his works . One of the
greatest innovative painters of the Early
Renaissance

El Greco (1541-1614) – One of the most original


and fascinating artists of his era, with a very
personal technique that was admired, three
centuries later, by the impressionist painters

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) – David is the


summit of neoclassicism, a grandiloquent artist
whose compositions seem to reflect his own
hectic and revolutionary life.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) – Modernist in his


context, Munch could be also considered the first
expressionist painter in history. Works like "The
Scream" are vital to understanding the twentieth
century painting.

Fernand Leger (1881-1955) – At first a cubist,


Leger was increasingly attracted to the world of
machinery and movement, creating works such as
"The Discs" (1918).
National Painters
Picture Description

Juan Luna- painter and revolutionary activist. He


is best known for his Spoliarium, his painting that
gave him the gold medal in the Exposición
Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884. 

Fernando Amorsolo- famous for his rural


landscape paintings and his mastery in the use of
light. 

Vicente Manansala- painter famous for his style


of Cubism. Like Amorsolo, Manansala is also a
National Artist for Visual Arts.

BenCab (Benedicto Cabrera)- the "artist-


activist", BenCab was awarded the National Artist
for Visual Arts in 2006.

Botong Francisco- also a National Artist for


Visual Arts awardee. He is famous for his murals.
He also discovered the Angono Petroglyphs in
1965.

José Joya (1931-1995)


A Filipino pioneer of Abstract expressionism,
multi-media painter José Joya uses bold and
vibrant colours with a variety of painting
techniques, layering, loose impasto strokes and
controlled drips. 

Pacita Abad (1946-2004)


Born on the northern island of Batanes, the
internationally revered artist first obtained a
degree in Political Science at the University of the
Philippines. Her paintings consist of vibrant
colors and a constant change of patterns and
materials.
Ang Kiukok (1935-2005)
Born to Chinese immigrants, Ang Kiukok is the
pioneer of Philippine modern figurative
expressionism. Rewarded as the country’s
National Artist in 2001, he was one of the most
successful commercial figures on the local art
scene from the 1960s until his death from cancer
in 2005.
