HOW THE SECOND WORLD WAR BIRTHED THE ORIGIN OF RAY-BAN:

As countries were heading into the second world war, there were several advancements in the
aviation industry. Planes could now fly farther and higher. However, now US Air Force pilots
were facing a peculiar issue – Glare from the sun. This glare was leading to several problems
such as headaches, vision problems, and altitude sickness. Here is where the Ray-Ban
aviators come into picture. These revolutionary glasses were able to eliminate glare while still
maintaining clear vision. And thus, in 1937 the Ray-Ban brand was born. Soon after, the
Aviators became a phenomenon which went beyond just the Airforce Pilots and everyday
outdoor enthusiast started to wear them. People who practice hobbies and pass times such as
hunting, shooting, fishing, etc. This was supported by different variants being introduced
such as the “Skeet Glass”, which was specifically crafted for outdoors environments. The use
and popularity of Ray-Bans for similar purposes continued throughout the second world war,
and beyond.

TOM CRUISE REVIVING RAY BAN IN 1980’s:


Tom Cruise and the brand Ray Ban has a very successful bond since 1980’s. It’s considered
that Tom Cruise movies have raised the popularity and revenue of Ray Ban single handedly.
Through Tom Cruise’s movies like ‘Risky Business’ (1983), ‘Top Gun’ (1986), and ‘Rain
Man’ (1988) Ray Ban Wayfarers gained a phenomenal mark and the brand got revived to a
big extent under the banner of these two movies. Before the release of Risky Business in
1983 Ray Ban Wayfarers were facing a decline in the market due to the disco era in the
1970’s and while the brand was trying to make a comeback Tom Cruise and his movies
happened.

When Tom Cruise traded his pants for Wayfarers in ‘Risky Business’ this re-boosted the sales
of the brand Ray Ban around 50 percent that sold around 3,60,000 pairs of Ray Ban
sunglasses in the year 1983.
Then later after three years in the movie ‘Top Gun’ Tom Cruise swapped Wayfarers for
Aviators, he was seen playing Volleyball, rode his motorcycle and took bath at his girl’s
house and all these collectively added an image to Ray Ban that it is cool preferring the Ray
Ban sunglasses. This resulted in the 40 percent increase in sales for Ray Ban in 1986.
Then in the year 1988 through the movie ‘Rain Man’ Tom Cruise boosted the sales to another
15 percent for Ray Ban showing that Ray Ban and Tom Cruise are made for each other and
people around the world to started preferring the sunglasses of Ray Ban.

THE BRAND OF HOLLYWOOD:

The Movie Men in Black acted as a great stage for the brand as all the main characters in the
movie are seen sporting Black Ray Bans. Will smith even mentioned the brand in the song
“…the black suits with the black Ray-Bans on”. It has acted as a great platform and has
created a trend where the actors sported the Wayfarers and the aviators look. Soon after the
release of the movie the market for the sunglasses have increased at a tremendous number
and many people started using them. As the MIB saga is still going on this movie even now
helps the promotions of black sunglasses.

The Hollywood and the western culture are well known for picking up new trends which
become globally recognized, one of those are the sporting of Black sunglasses which are the
aviators and the Wayfarers. From James Bond to Mission impossible we can see a wide range
and verities of sunglasses which were being sported by many famous actors and celebrities.
This has influenced people to use sunglasses for many reasons such as style factors, UV
protection and also for other Eye related issues

In the recent RayBan ad which was telecasted on Spotify, it shows a person who will be very
tired after a long cleaning of the pool area under the hot sun. He jumps in to the pool and
feels so cool. Towards the end of the ad, the person seems to be sitting inside a bath tub.
