thirsty from his journey. However, as if remembering his mission, he changes his mind and asks
for bread to ensure this is the widow he is to engage. The widow declares she has only a handful
of bread and a little oil and was going to use it as a last meal for her and son before they die.
Elijah says, “do not fear,” as if he knew what was in her heart and instructs her to go and first
make him a small bread, then make something for herself and her son. God was using Elijah to
test the woman’s faith. We are always tested prior to God using us. No doubt Elijah’s request for
bread, tested the woman mightily, as she knew it was her last meal! Remember the widows mite
giving her last penny to the Lord? Elijah recognized that the widow was gripped by fear but she
was given an opportunity to exercise whatever faith she had in obedience to the Lord, through
Elijah.

God’s provision to meet our need, even in our darkest circumstances, is a partnering of our faith
with his will. We see this unfold as a 3 miracle process of growing the faith of the widow.

1. God brought his light into the widows darkest despair. The jug of oil can be seen as a
representation of the Spirit of the Lord bringing the light of truth into our lifes. One can
plummet very quickly into despair when life surrounds us with darkness and gloom. John 10:10 -
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it
abundantly.” John is contrasting the purposes of light and darkness. Elijah brought light into the
widows otherwise dark reality, giving her an opportunity to see that she has a choice to follow
the light or the darkness.

2. God sustains life. Just as he provided manna for the people of Israel in the wilderness, he
provides for our basic needs. God uses the jar of flour to show us that he does provide for our
basic physical needs. His provision may not be extravagant, but the way in which it is provided
can be extravagantly supernatural. These first two miracles cement the widows faith in the Lord
and Elijah as they minister to her.

3. God is the source of resurrection power and it comes from non-other. This is the first example
of resurrected life in the old testament - read 1 Kings 17:17-24. Elisha also raises a dead boy to life
in 2 Kings 4:18-37. The widows son dies and her reaction is to think that Elijah is there to judge
the sins of her past and punish her by causing her son to die - see Deut 28:15-19. Guilt is a
powerful tool used by the Accuser (Satan) to squash our hope of forgiveness and reconciliation
with God for our sinful behavior. However, Elijah does not affirm her guilt. Instead, he tells her
to hand over her son so that he can petition the Lord. Elijah does not understand the reason
God has allowed this tragedy but petitions him anyway. God hears his prayer and performs an
unprecedented miracle. Do you see a connection with the resurrection of Christ in the tomb?
Elijah is alone with the boy’s body in a separate upper room of the house, symbolizing the tomb
in which Christ was buried. Christ laid there 3 days, the same number of times that Elijah
stretched himself over the boy. The widow reacts to this miracle the same way many in Israel

reacted to the miracles of Jesus. They believed in the Son of God and that the words from his
mouth were true.

Prophetic takeaway - The famine is a judgment that falls on everyone, both the just and unjust.
For the wicked the judgment is a punishment but for the just it is a trial. The judgment reminds
both parties, Israel & the nations, who is sovereign and has authority and dominion over
mankind and creation. God’s ultimate purpose, however, is to identify how each individual will
respond. The famine identifies the wheat from the tares, the faithful from the unrighteous -
regardless of what nation one comes from. God does not show partiality - 1 Tim 5:21. This is the
same process that the peoples of the world will undergo during Daniel’s 70th Week and the
Great Tribulation. Everyone will be compelled to choose where their salvation will come from -
the world or by the savior of the world. Just because you are Israeli, does not mean you are
exempt from judgment. Rom 9:6 says - “not all Israel is Israel.” In other words, there is a true
Israel who is comprised of the true children of Israel.
