gave to the prophets of the Lord - Ex 21:24. By the way, this is the same river that God used to
deliver Israel at Mt. Tabor in the time of Deborah from the hand of the oppressive and pagan
King Jabin of Canaan following the repentance of Israel - Judges 4:23. This event also has
prophetic implications. Rev 13:13 explains that the 2nd Beast of Daniel’s 70th Week will perform
great signs and wonders. Specifically, he will call fire down from heaven just as Elijah had done in
the confrontation on Mt. Carmel. This is likely to be a significant sign to deceive ethnic Israel
into believing the anti-christ is God. This same event took place at Solomons Temple dedication
in 2 Chron 7:1 - “As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and
consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.” The
Lord made a promise to Solomon in a dream vision in 2 Chron 7:13-14 - “When I shut up the
heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence
among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and
seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their
sin and heal their land.”

1 Kings 18:41-46
It is now, at this point, that King Ahab comes back into view. Elijah’s task is not yet complete
because the confrontations with Ahab have all been about the rain, and it still has not yet rained.
Recall that God told Elijah to leave the widow and go to Ahab because he is going to make it rain
- 1 Kings 18:1. It’s interesting that God is not finished yet with Ahab. God could have disposed of
him at Mt. Carmel with the judgment that came upon the false prophets of Baal. Instead, Elijah
tells him to go back up to Mt. Carmel and eat and drink, which is an act to satisfy the needs of
the flesh. On the other hand, Elijah also goes back up to the top of Mt. Carmel but he is going to
pray, thereby satisfying the spiritual need to bring about the promise of God to make it rain, very
much in contrast to King Ahab. This time, however, Elijah does not pray before Israel as he had
done previously, but in private as a humble intercessor. Again, God continues to draw a
contrasting view between these two figures in order for people to clearly see their choices in life.

This time, Elijah’s prayer is a private one and the manner in which he conducts himself reflects
the humility with which he approaches God with his request to make it rain - Eph 6:18, “praying
at all times in the Spirit, with supplication” or a pleading with a humble heart. This is a good
lesson to learn whenever we approach God with our heartfelt prayers. God wants us to put away
the old self and take on the likeness of Christ who is our life Col 3:2-4 - “Set your minds on
things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden
with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in
glory.” Likewise, James 4:1-10 instructs us to not ask wrongly. We are not to ask for those things
that feed our worldly desires and passions. He opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble.
If we humble ourselves, he will exalt us.

Elijah’s prayer is a powerful reminder that we too must pray as a means to connect and partner
with God in fulfilling his purpose for our lives. If we do not pray, how can we expect God to work
in our lives? It is a mistake to act on the presumption that God will act according to our hearts
desire because he already knows what it is. If this were true, would Jesus have spent so much of
his time alone with the Father? Jesus was showing us that God’s desire is to have a relationship
with us and work out his plan for our lives with him, through him, and in him. Elijah’s prayer is a
private one showing us the importance of having one on one time with the Lord and the Lord’s
desire to focus on each one of us as his child. God will guide our path and show us the way
forward (PS 119:105) if we connect with him and have faith that he will be with us and that his
way forward is good and true “his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true” - 2 Sam
22:31 and PS 18:30.

God told Elijah that he would send rain, and Elijah’s prayer reflects his faith that the Lord would
deliver on his promise, Joshua 21:45 - “Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had
made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.”

Elijah instructs his servant to look toward the sea to see the coming rain. Six times the servant looks
but sees nothing. It is only on the seventh time that he sees a small cloud the size of a man’s hand.
Waiting on the Lord to answer our prayers requires patient endurance. God will fulfill his purposes in
his perfect timing and not ours. This is demonstrated to us by the number of times Elijah’s servant
looks for the promised rain - seven times. Seven is a number associated with completeness. In this
context, the sign of the coming rain appears at the time appointed by God. Note that the rain did not
suddenly appear but it’s sign first appeared, grew and then the rain fell. God often gives his faithful
followers a sign of hope marking the coming of his promises. Like the small rain cloud appearing, the
signs of the Messiah’s coming were evident to those who were attentive. The payoff was that Jesus’
work on the cross had small beginnings but in time he changed the world. So to, with the Lord’s
return, the signs will be evident to those who are watching and waiting for his second coming.

King Ahab departs Mt. Carmel ahead of Elijah to the city of Jezreel, a distance well over 10 miles.
The city of Jezreel is situated within the Valley of Jezreel which was a highly valuable agricultural
plain which would be ripe and ready for produce after 3.5 years of drought. Filled by the Spirit of the
Lord, Elijah runs, in a supernatural display, catching up with the chariot of Ahab. King Ahab offers
Elijah no consolation, no acknowledgment, nor respect as God’s servant and his mighty display of
power atop Mt. Carmel. King Ahab could have brought about his own reconciliation with the Lord by
simply giving Elijah the respect he was due and offering him a ride in his royal chariot. Instead, we
see an indignant Ahab, racing against Elijah, content to wallow in his stubborn and willful
disobedience and distain for God. This is what happens to a person with a hardened heart. Despite the
clear signs of God’s judgment but also his will to forgive, many will continue to reject what God has
to offer in their pride and lust for life - Rom 1:28. This is a reminder to all that in the last days many
will remain defiant despite the clear signs from the Lord to repent - Rev 16:9.
