Activity Guide and Evaluation Rubric – Pre task - Recognition

1. Activity Description

Type of activity: Individual

Evaluation moment: Initial
Highest score of the activity: 25 points
The activity starts on: The activity ends on:
Monday, February 7, 2022 Sunday, February 20, 2022
With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:
• Recognize basic concepts about electromagnetic waves through the thematic review
and the identification of parameters and variables.
The activity consists of: develop the following 5 steps.
Step 1: Explore the academic resource described at the beginning of the next part of this
document "Activity".
Step 2: Download the “Annex 0 - Delivery format – Pre task” found in the Learning
Environment, in the "Activities guide and evaluation rubric – Pre task -Recognition" folder.
Step 3: Answer the 4 introductory questions proposed in the next part of this "Activity"
document.
Step 4: Each student must complete the task in their individual "Delivery format",
verifying the requirements of the evaluation rubric. You can share your progress and
questions in the "Pre task" forum.
Step 5: Submit the requested work in the Evaluation Environment.

Activity
Explore within the Knowledge Environment, in Unit 1, the bibliographical references of
Quesada, M., & Maroto, J. (2014), pages 49-60 and the video of Gutiérrez, W. (2017), and
solve the following questions:

1. What is an electromagnetic wave? Describe with your words.

2. What are the parameters in an electromagnetic wave? Describe them with your words.
3. What is electrical permittivity 𝜺 and magnetic permeability 𝝁 of a medium?
4. From the following wave equation:

𝟐𝝅
𝑬𝒚 (𝒙, 𝒕) = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝒘𝒕 − 𝒌𝒙)𝒋̂ = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏 (𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒕 − 𝒙) 𝒋̂ = 𝑪𝟏 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝑪𝟐 𝒕 − 𝑪𝟑 𝒙)𝒋̂
𝝀
where 𝑪𝟏 , 𝑪𝟐 and 𝑪𝟑 correspond to the last 3 digits of your identification.

Notice that in the equation:

1
𝟐𝝅
𝑨 = 𝑪𝟏 𝒘 = 𝟐𝝅𝒇 = 𝑪𝟐 𝒌= = 𝑪𝟑
𝝀
Complete: example, if your id is 12345678 then, 𝐶1 = 6, 𝐶2 = 7 and 𝐶3 = 8
Parameter and unit Solution Description
Example: It is the highest value
a. Amplitude 𝑨 [V/m]
𝐴 = 𝐶1 = 6 𝑉/𝑚 of the wave oscillations
Example: if 𝐶2 = 7, then

𝑤 7 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠
b. Frequency 𝒇 = 𝒘/𝟐𝜋 [Hz] 𝑓= =
2𝜋 2𝜋 𝑟𝑎𝑑

𝑓 = 1.114𝐻𝑧
c. Wavelength 𝝀 = 𝟐𝜋/𝑘 [m]
d. Propagation speed 𝑽𝒑 = 𝒇 𝝀 [m/s]
e. Wave number 𝒌 [rad/m]
f. Angular frequency 𝒘 [rad/s]
g. Direction of travel (𝒙, 𝒚 or 𝒛)
It is the oscillation
h. Polarization direction (𝒊̂, ̂𝒋 or 𝒌
̂)
direction of the wave

The following graph helps to identify the direction of polarization and propagation to solve the
points g and h of the table.

For the development of the activity consider that:

In the Initial Information Environment, you must:

Perform the course recognition by entering each of the environments, identify the "Course
News" forum, where the course director will permanently share information.
In the Learning Environment, you must:
1. Enter the folder "Activity Guide and Evaluation Rubric - Pre task - Recognition" and
download the activity guide and the delivery format for the Pre task.
2. Explore the activity guide and follow the instructions given there step by step.
3. Optionally, make individual contributions in the Pre task forum with the progress you
make.
In the Evaluation Environment, you must:
1. In the last 3 days, before the end of the activity, you must send the final individual
work, in the space "Pre task - Recognition - Evaluation rubric and activity submission".
Evidences of individual work:
The individual evidence to be submitted is: a PDF document with the following Contents
• Cover page.
• Solution of the questions.
• At least 1 reference (use APA format).
Evidences of collaborative work:
No collaborative evidence is required in this activity.

2. General Guidelines for the Development of Evidences to Submit

Please keep in mind that all individual or collaborative written products must comply with
the spelling rules and presentation conditions defined in this activity guide.
Regarding the use of references, consider that the product of this activity must comply
with APA style.
In any case, make sure you comply with the rules and avoid academic plagiarism. You can
review your written products using the Turnitin tool found in the virtual campus.

Under the Academic Code of Conduct, the actions that infringe the academic order, among
others, are the following: paragraph e) Plagiarism is to present as your own work all or
part of a written report, task or document of invention carried out by another person. It
also implies the use of citations or lack of references, or it includes citations where there is
no match between these and the reference and paragraph f) To reproduce, or copy for
profit, educational resources or results of research products, which have rights reserved
for the University. (Acuerdo 029 - 13 de diciembre de 2013, artículo 99)

The academic penalties students will face are:

3
a) In case of academic fraud demonstrated in the academic work or evaluation, the score
obtained will be zero (0.0) without any disciplinary measures being derived.
b) In case of proven plagiarism in academic work of any nature, the score obtained will be
zero (0.0), without any disciplinary measures being derived.
