Activity Guide and Evaluation Rubric – Pre task - Recognition

1. Activity Description

Type of activity: Individual

Evaluation moment: Initial
Highest score of the activity: 25 points
The activity starts on: The activity ends on:
Thursday, August 17, 2023 Wednesday, August 30, 2023
With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:
• To recognize the basic concepts about electromagnetic waves by reviewing, learning
and identification of parameters and variables.
The activity consists of: develop the following 5 steps.
Step 1: Explore the academic resource described at the beginning of the next part of this
document called "Activity".
Step 2: Download the delivery format “Annex 0” found in the Learning Environment,
in the "Activities guide and evaluation rubric – Pre task - Recognition" folder.
Step 3: Answer the 4 questions and solve the exercise in the section called "Activity".
Step 4: Each student must complete the task in their individual "Delivery format"
verifying the requirements of the evaluation rubric. Share your questions in the "Pre task"
forum or in the groups generated by the tutor (Teams, WhatsApp, etc.).
Step 5: Submit their final work in PDF format in the Evaluation Environment.

Activity
Investigate the following concepts by exploring texts or internet sources (it is
recommended to use the e-library of the UNAD and consult the author Shahen Hacyan's
book on gravitational waves, pages 22 to 27). Each concept must be explained using
your own words.
1. What is an electromagnetic wave?
2. Parameters of electromagnetic waves (amplitude, frequency, period, wavelength and
wave number).
3. Difference between mechanical wave and electromagnetic wave.

Explore within the Knowledge Environment, in Unit 1, the bibliographical references of

Leyton, O., & Comas, C. (2023) and Quesada, M., & Maroto, J. (2014), pages 57-67 and
solve the following exercise:

4. The following is a sinusoidal function E:

1
𝑬(𝒙) = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒙)
Where 𝑨 is the amplitude of the function and 𝒇 is its frequency.

Exercise: Using the first number of your identification as 𝑨 and the last number of
your identification (greater than zero) as 𝒇, graph the function 𝑬(𝒙) using any software
like Geogebra, Symbolab or other, identify 𝑨 and 𝒇 on the generated image.

Use:
Geogebra: https://www.geogebra.org/graphing
Symbolab: https://es.symbolab.com/graphing-calculator

Geogebra example: if your identification is 87654320 then 𝑨=8, f=2, graphing:

Figure 1: Geogebra. (2023). Graphing. https://www.geogebra.org/graphing

The graph shows that the maximum amplitude A of the wave is 8 units (A=8 units) and
that the frequency f is 2 cycles from x=0 to x=1 (f=2cycle/unit).

Attention: See a step-by-step guide on graphing in the delivery format "Annex 0".

For the development of the activity consider that:
In the Initial Information Environment, you must:
1. Perform the course recognition by entering each of the environments, identify the
"Course News" forum, where the course director will permanently share information.
In the Learning Environment, you must:
1. Download the activity guide and the delivery format for the Pre task.
2. Explore the activity guide and follow the instructions.
3. Optionally, share your questions in the "Pre task" forum.
In the Evaluation Environment, you must:
1. In the 3 days before the closing of the activity, you must submit their final work.
Evidences of individual work:
The individual evidence to be submitted is: a PDF document with the name 'Pre Task -
name surname', with the following contents:
• Cover page.
• Answer to questions.
• Solution of the graphic exercise.
• At least 1 reference (use APA format).
Evidences of collaborative work:
No collaborative evidence is required in this activity.

2. General Guidelines for the Development of Evidences to Submit

Please keep in mind that all individual or collaborative written products must comply with
the spelling rules and presentation conditions defined in this activity guide.
Regarding the use of references, consider that the product of this activity must comply
with APA style.
In any case, make sure you comply with the rules and avoid academic plagiarism. You can
review your written products using the Turnitin tool found in the virtual campus.
Under the Academic Code of Conduct, the actions that infringe the academic order, among
others, are the following: paragraph e) Plagiarism is to present as your own work all or
part of a written report, task or document of invention carried out by another person. It
also implies the use of citations or lack of references, or it includes citations where there is
no match between these and the reference and paragraph f) To reproduce, or copy for
profit, educational resources or results of research products, which have rights reserved
for the University. (Acuerdo 029 - 13 de diciembre de 2013, artículo 99)

The academic penalties students will face are:

a) In case of academic fraud demonstrated in the academic work or evaluation, the score
obtained will be zero (0.0) without any disciplinary measures being derived.
b) In case of proven plagiarism in academic work of any nature, the score obtained will be
zero (0.0), without any disciplinary measures being derived.
