With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning
outcome:

- Analyze the nature of grammar by understanding the foundations of the


different classical levels of language study.

The activity consists of:

Step 1- Reading: Go to the Learning Environment and check the Course Contents
and Bibliographic References for Unit 1.
- Read Chapter 7 - Grammar, pages 80-95, in Yule, G. (2010).

Step 2 – Parts of speech: In this step, you have to identify all the parts of speech
considering page 82 in Yule, G. (2010). To do this you have to choose one of the
following sentences to identify its parts of speech.

Inform about the sentence you choose in the forum so that no sentences are
repeated among students.

Step 3 – Analysis: Answer the following question, considering pages 83 – 85 in Yule,


G. (2010).:

-What is the difference between grammatical gender and natural gender?

- Write the reasons each sentence is Grammatically correct or incorrect in the


following sentences:

(1) I saw the white house. (Grammatically correct)

(2) I saw the house white. (Grammatically incorrect)

(3) I painted the house white. (Grammatically correct)

Why is (3) grammatical while (2) is not, given that both end in the same sequence
of house white?

Step 4 – Feedback: Check your mates’ individual works and give relevant feedback
in order to improve. You can provide some recommendations in terms of content,
presentation, organization, language, etc. Take in mind that your comments have to
be really important. Comments like “excellent work”, “congratulations”, and “good
job” are not considered relevant feedback, just comments that allow your partners to
improve. It is asked to check at least once each one of your mates’ works.

Step 5 – Delivery: Send to the Evaluation environment a PDF file with the analysis,
answers from step 3, and screenshots of your forum participation.
