Module 2

Unique Earth

Objectives
The students are expected to:

a. recognize the difference in the physical and chemical properties between the Earth and its

neighboring planets

b. identify the factors that allow a planet to support life

Lecture
 The earth is our home. It is a unique planet in the solar system where life is possible.
 The earth is located at a favorable distance from the sun.
 The earth is the only planet on which water is found in liquid, solid and gaseous form. It has one moon.
It is therefore called the blue planet.
 70% of the earth is saltwater.
 The earth is surrounded by a blanket of gases called the atmosphere where 78% is nitrogen, 21% is
oxygen and 1% are other gases.

Activities
Compare and Contrast the Planets
A. Directions: Use the Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences between Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Use the information from Table 1 as the basis for the comparison among the mentioned planets.

Interstellar Crash Landing

B. Directions: Imagine that you are in an interstellar voyage then your spaceship suffers mechanical problems
and will be forced to land. Fortunately, you are passing through the Yanib System, which is composed of a
sun-like star surrounded by seven planets, some of which have moons. The profiles of planets and moons of
the Yanib System are listed in Table 1. Decide the best place to land. Write down on the space provided on
your planet choice. The reasons for your choice should also be written down. Name 2 other planets and
reason out why it is not chosen.
