You will be divided into 6 groups. The teacher will be


giving you a crossword puzzle. You will just find the words
that is named to a star or talked about stars. The groups
that will find more will be the winner.

Many constellations have names that can be tracked


back to early Babylonians and Greek civilizations.
For example, the Greek - Orion which means “hunter”.

Early Filipinos called it as “balatik”, a trap used in hunting


wild pigs.
Size, brightness, and Color
of a Star
There are approximately 400 billion
stars in our galaxy and there are about 170
billion galaxies. These stars differ in sizes
brightness and color.
As you look at the comparison, the Star
Rigel is bigger than the Sirius. Despite of
the size of the Rigel from Sirius, why do
you think Sirius appeared larger than the
Rigel?
The brightness of a
star as seen on the Earth depends on two
factors, the distance and the actual brightness
or (absolute brightness). The star’s brightness
as seen from earth is its apparent brightness.
It depends on how far a star is from earth.

Astronomers consider the star’s absolute


brightness when comparing stars. A star’s
absolute brightness is the brightness of the star
would have if all of them are the same distance
from the Earth.
Does a color of a star affects the temperature of the star?
- Yes, color does affect the temperature of the star.

- the pattern for the least hot to hottest color of a star is red, orange,
yellow, white, and blue.
Constellation seen on different months of the year
A certain constellation can be seen in a certain
month.
During December (Winter) we can see Orion, Cetus
Eridanus, Gemini, Perseus, Taurus, and Canis major

During the month of March (Spring), we can see


Bootes, Cancer, Crates, Hydra, Leo, Virgo.

During June (Summer) we can see Sagittarius,


Aquila, Cygnus, Hercules, and Scorpius.
During September (Autumn), Pegasus,
Andromeda, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Pisces.
How early people used the Constellations

Before the calendars, people cannot determine when to sow or


harvest except for looking into the sky.
Ancient people developed a way to remember the patterns by
giving them names and stories.
Gemini is seen in the Philippines during months of April and
May. It is the time for harvest.
Constellations is also
used for navigation. The
Polaris is widely used in
navigation because it
does not change in
position.
