SECTION 104(2)d-ROCKFILL MATERIALS

##This section cross-references Sections 104

If any of the above sections are relevant, they should be included in the specification.
If any of the above sections are not included in the specification, all references to those sections
should be struck out, ensuring that the remaining text is still coherent.
The work consists of the construction of rockfill zones of embankments and other rockfills required
by the drawings and specifications.

104(2)d.01 DESCRIPTION

This section covers the requirements for the use of rockfill in embankment construction. This
section should be used taking into account the requirements of Section 104.

104(2)d.02 DEFINITIONS

RockFill:
A material comprised of larger fragments of hard, sound durable rock containing only a small
amount of fine particles, which when placed produces an embankment deriving its stability from
the mechanical interlock of the coarser rock particles and not from the compaction of finer
material.

104(2)d.03 MATERIALS

(a) RockFill Material

Material for rock fill embankment construction can be obtained from excavations within the
works or from a specified source if any.
Rock fill shall be comprised of sound rock fragments having not less than two broken or
angular faces. Not less than 90% of rock fragments with dimensions greater than 100 mm.
Prior to placement, rock fill material shall have no particle dimension exceeding 500 mm and
minimal fine material.

104(2)d.04 ROCK FILL EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION

The rock shall be dumped and spread into position in approximately horizontal layers. The rock shall be
placed so that the completed fill shall be graded with the smaller rock fragments placed in the inner portion
of the embankment and the larger rock fragments placed on the outer slopes. Rock shall be placed to
produce a stable fill that contains no large unfilled spaces caused by bridging of the larger fraction.
