Evolution and Biodiversity

INTRODUCTION AND FOCUS QUESTIONS

Evolution is the process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient
ancestors. Evolution is responsible for both the remarkable similarities we see across all life
and the amazing diversity of that life — but exactly how does it work?

Fundamental to the process is genetic variation upon which selective forces can act for
evolution to occur. This section examines the mechanisms of evolution focusing on:

• Descent and the genetic differences that are heritable and passed on to the next
generation;
• Mutation, migration (gene flow), genetic drift, and natural selection as mechanisms of
change;
• The importance of genetic variation;
• The random nature of genetic drift and the effects of a reduction in genetic variation;
• How variation, differential reproduction, and heredity result in evolution by natural
selection; and
• How different species can affect each other's evolution through coevolution.

Population Growth and Carrying Capacity

MELC Week:

• Explain the relationship between population growth and

carrying capacity. S10LT-IIIi-42 (Week 7-8)

POPULATION GROWTH RATE

Main Idea:

Population of organism has the potential for growth when resources are
abundant. As organisms interact with the living and nonliving components of their
environment, there numbers may increase, decrease, or remain stable.

Population size can change in response to certain limiting conditions in the environment.
Population size increases as new individuals are given in the number of individual births in a
population in a certain period of time is called birth rate. The member of individuals in a
population is reduced by the death of organisms, which may be due to disease or old age. Death
rate indicates the number of deaths in a certain population in a given time. Population changes
are summarized in the following statements. Aside from death and birth, migration can also alter
population size. Immigration refers to the movement of individual members of a population into
another group of population, while emigration is the migration of organisms out of a population.
For animals, a factor such as food and shelter encourages organisms to migrate.

LIMITING POPULATION
Growth Populations flourish in favorable conditions such as adequate food. However,
there is no population that can increase without restriction. The environment possesses abiotic
and biotic limiting factors that influence population growth. These population growth limiting
factors may be categorized as density independent and density-dependent.
