ADAPTATION AND SURVIVAL

DIRECTIONS: This Learning Activity Sheet is about the adaptation and survival of
organisms in a changing environment. Follow the instructions in each part and
answer the guide questions that follow.

PART A. My Bio-cabulary

Explain each of the given terminologies in your own words then answer the
question.
Terminologies How will I Remember
Biodiversity is the diversity of life on Earth at all levels, from
Biodiversity genes to ecosystems.

Adaptation
plant or animal, in surviving and reproducing in its
environment

Ability to stay alive

Survivability

Think About It!

Based on the answers above, explain how species diversity increases the
probability of adaptation and survival of organisms.
Because if the population is diverse, it is probable that one of those neutral
variants (exaptations) will end up boosting the fitness of those who have
that characteristic, i.e. become an adaptation.

Specific Week: 7 (LAS 4)

Target Competency: Explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation and survival of organisms in
changing environment (S10LT-IIIh-41)

PART B. Adaptation and Survival

Study the illustrations of two ecosystems. Identify the adaptation of the

organisms in each ecosystem and explain how that adaptation helps the organisms
to survive in their environment. Write your answers in the space provided.

Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem Desert Ecosystem

Spider monkeys have long limbs to help Camels can drink gallons in one go so that
them climb through the rainforest trees. they can go without water for over a week

Plants have leaves with pointy tips. This Cactus have spikes to protect them from
allows water to run off the leaves quickly animals wishing to use stored water
without damaging or breaking them..
Sloths use camouflage and move very Dorcas gazelles can get all of the water
slowly to make it difficult for predators to they need from the food in their diet but
spot them they drink water when it’s available.

Think About It!

1. Which of the following ecosystems has greater biodiversity and explain the
possible reason for this observation?
In my opinion, I think the tropical rainforest ecosystem has greater biodiversity because
it is more liveable, water and food is more abundant in that ecosystem, and the climate
is better, not very hot but not really cold either, just the right temperature.
2. What factors in the environment affect the biodiversity of organisms in an
area?
climate change, other species, pollution, humans

Specific Week: 7 (LAS 4)

Target Competency: Explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation and survival of organisms in
Part C: Carrying changing environment (S10LT-IIIh-41)
Capacity
Carrying capacity is the maximum number of organisms that can be
supported or carried by the environment. Each population of organisms has a
different carrying capacity, depending on the number of resources available in the
area in which it lives. The population’s growth is restricted or limited by factors called
the Limiting Factors. If a factor regulates a population’s growth and is influenced by
population density, then it is a density-dependent limiting factor. If the population’s
density is not directly influenced changes in the population growth, then it is called a
density-independent limiting factor.

Use the chart below to answer the following questions:

Illustrated by Russell P. Samson

Guide questions:

1. Based on the graph, determine the population of carabaos in:

i. 4 years: 300
ii. 5 years: 500
iii. 6 years: 600

2. What is the maximum carrying capacity of carabaos in the given ecosystem?

600 is the maximum carrying capacity of carabaos in the given ecosystem.

3. How many years did it take for the carabao to reach its carrying capacity?
Explain your answer.
It took 5 and a half years for the carabaos to reach their carrying capacity. 5 and
½ years is the amount of time I gave because in the graph, the point where they
reached the carrying capacity is in between the 5th and 6th year.

Specific Week: 7 (LAS 4)

Target Competency: Explain the relationship between population growth and carrying capacity (S10LT-IIIi-42)
Part D: Complete Me!

The Density-dependent limiting factor, density-independent limiting factor,

logistic population growth, and exponential population growth are the new key terms
you have encountered in studying biodiversity.

Complete the graphic organizer below to show the differences between these
key terms.

Think About It!

1. Choose one factor from what you have listed above and explain how it
affects population growth in an ecosystem.

Forest fire is an example of Density-independent limiting factor. It affects the

organisms in the forest but it doesn’t depend on the number of organisms in the
ecosystem or population.

2. How is population growth related to carrying capacity?

There is a clear link between population growth and carrying capacity. The
carrying capacity of a population refers to the greatest number of organisms
which can be sustained indefinitely by the resources available in a given area.
The rate at which each organism grows in size or number is referred to as
population growth. When a population reaches its carrying capacity, it begins to
decline, and the population returns to normal.
