MYP 1 _Unit 3 _Overview

Unit Name: How do living things work?

SOI: By understanding the relationship between the necessities of life and the
specialized forms and functions of living things, we can make decisions and
take actions for healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

Purpose of the unit:

Enable students to know, understand and reflect on cellular diversity and its
significance & how it helps us to make decisions for healthier and sustainable
lifestyles, to provide equity and justice to the world and its people.

Concepts:

Key Concept: Relationship

Related Concept: Form, Function

Summative Assessment:

Criterion A : Knowing & Understanding

Criterion D : Reflecting on the impact of Science

Criterion A

Students will be able to

i. outline scientific knowledge

ii. apply scientific knowledge and understanding to solve problems set in familiar
situations and suggest solutions to problems set in unfamiliar situations

iii. interpret information to make scientifically supported judgments.

Using their Thinking and communication Skills.

Criterion D

i. summarize the ways in which science is applied and used to address a

specific problem or issue

ii. describe and summarize the various implications of using science and its
application in solving a specific problem or issue

iii. apply scientific language effectively

iv. document the work of others and sources of information used

Using their Research, thinking and communication Skills.

Content and skills:

What will students know?

That cells are the structural and functional unit of life.

Diversity in structure in various cell types (specialized cells) is related to its

function.

Diverse forms and their function within the cell ( cell organelles and cell
inclusions)

Diversity of life makes an ecosystem resilient

Knowing & understanding about cells and their functions will help to make
decisions for healthier and sustainable lifestyles to provide justice, and also
equity to the world and its people.

What will students understand?

The characteristics of living things-MRS GREN;

The structure and function of a cell;

Subcellular structures. (basic parts of cell : Cell membrane, Cytoplasm &

Nucleus & elementary idea of cell organelles and their functions and cell
inclusions in brief)·

Comparison between a plant cell and an animal cell.

Understand the relationship between the structure and Functions of cells.

Introduction to genetic engineering & GM Foods( in context to making decisions

and taking actions for healthier and more sustainable lifestyles) ·

What will students do?

Charts and models to exhibit diversity of cell types & life forms & Cell inclusions

Construct clear and accurate diagrams of various cell types to understand

diversity & Learn to use a light microscope.

Draw diagrams and describe their associated functions (Nucleus, Chloroplast ,

Mitochondrion ).

Interpret microscope slides of cells and prepare onion cells and observe its
parts under a simple microscope. (Diagrammatic representation)

Reflecting on the impact of science through opinion pieces/models/ charts on

how genetically engineered products have provided justice and equity to the
world.
