Strategy #2 & App

Dr. Schmalz

April 12th, 2021

Date of Strategy Implementation: April 2nd, 2021

Topic/ Content Area: Spelling Words/Writing

Grade Level/Grouping: 1st grade/whole group

Strategy Used: Multi-sensory Instruction (Tracing & writing)

Rationale: I am implementing this strategy to the whole class because the students need to work
on the forming of letters and they my co-op did not do a spelling test that Friday, so this was
their spelling test for the day. The evidence that I have for this strategy is that it can help the
students engage in more than one sense at a time. Also, it helps the students use their sight,
movement and hearing for when I say the word in the sentence. Another thing is it helps the
students learn more than one way for their spelling words that they are learning. My Cooperating
teacher and I thought about this strategy because she did not want to give spelling test on the
iPad or on paper. She ran out of time to give the spelling test, so we decided that with the
strategy if would help them practice their spelling words and we told them that this was out in
place for their spelling test. Also, the strategy helped the students because they had to focus on
the word they were drawing with their finger and the students also had to listen to me when I told
them the words because I was giving to different test.

Step-by-Step Description of Strategy Implementation: I first started by telling the students

that we were going to do a spelling test but using shaving cream because Mr. Parrish was not
going to do a paper test or a test on the iPad. Then, I walked around and sprayed shaving cream
on their desks and only had them use one hand to spread the shaving cream around their desk. I
told the students that had a challenge list their spelling word and then the other students the
regular spelling words. I would start with the regular list and then tell them their word and then
give them a sentence with it, so they would be able to understand the spelling word. Next, I
would go to the challenge list for those students and say their spelling word and then say it in a
sentence and then repeat the word. The whole class had 10 spelling words for each of the list and
this took about 45 mins because the students would use all their shaving cream, so I would have
to go back around and give them more. After I would give them more, then they would have to
spread it around, so I would have to wait for them to get ready. While the students were spelling
their words, I would then go around and make sure they got the spelling word right in the
shaving cream. If the students got the spelling word wrong, I would have them erase the word
and try again until the whole class got the spelling word right.

Result of the Strategy: The result of this strategy was successful for the students because they
were able to form their letters of their spellings words correctly. The students were able to listen
for the words when I said them and were able to stay engaged with the lesson/spelling test
because of the shaving cream. I made sure that the students had the correct forming of letters and
the right way to spell the word. After all the students had the right spelling on the desk in shaving
cream, I had the students spell the word aloud together as a class. I also had the students do the
same thing for the challenge lists. Also, I intended to have this strategy benefit my EL because
she is only at the beginning level on the WIDA chart for writing. This can help her be able to
move up to a higher level for listening because she is in between developing and expanding on
the WIDA chart. For speaking, Irina has already accomplished repeating simple words, this can
give her more practice with saying back the words that I have told the stundents for their spelling
test.
