Problem 1: C CV O M
Problem 1: C CV O M
Problem 1*
* This problem is not representative of the final exam because such an open question will never come.
However, it is a good exercise to familiarize yourself with hydraulic symbols.
After paying attention to all details, describe the meaning of the hydraulic symbols shown in Figure 1 using
your words (feel free to answer in Norwegian if you want to):
a) b) c) d) e) f)
g) h) i) j) k) l)
m) n) o) p) q) r)
Problem 2
Identify the three characteristic sub-systems of the following hydraulic circuits (i.e., the power supply, the
power control, and the actuation sub-system) by highlight their components:
a) System #1 in Figure 2 (left side);

Problem 3
A hydraulic pump with fixed-displacement D = 36 [cm3/rev] is rotated at a speed n = 3000 [rev/min] against
a pressure drop Δp = 120 [bar]. Assuming ideal functioning, answer the following questions:
a) What is the flow rate in [L/min] delivered by the pump?
b) What is the torque in [Nm] required to drive the pump?
c) What is the mechanical power in [kW] required to drive the pump?
Problem 4
A variable-displacement hydraulic motor has maximum displacement DMax = 250 [cm3/rev]. Its output shaft
drives a load at an angular speed equal to n = 150 [rev/min]. The displacement setting of the motor is α =
75 [%] while the pressure drop across the motor is measured equal to Δp = 315 [bar]. Assuming ideal
functioning, answer the following questions:
a) What is the flow rate in [L/min] demanded by the motor to drive the load at the given speed?
b) What is the torque in [Nm] acting on the output shaft?
c) What is the mechanical power in [kW] delivered to the load?

Problem 5
A variable-displacement hydraulic motor has maximum displacement DMax = 125 [cm3/rev]. It is supplied
by a constant flow rate equal to 80 [L/min]. The motor is driving an external load that causes a load torque
TL = 120 [Nm] on the motor shaft. Assuming ideal functioning of the component (i.e., no losses), address
the following aspects:
a) Determine the displacement setting of the motor in [-] that results for a motor speed equal to 1200
[rev/min]. Then, evaluate the hydraulic power in [kW] consumed by the motor and the mechanical
power in [kW] delivered to the user;
b) Evaluate both the maximum and the minimum motor speed in [rev/min] for a given flow rate equal
to 80 [L/min] if the displacement setting of the unit (α) can be adjusted within the following range
25 [%] ≤ α ≤ 100 [%].
The results are: a) 0.53 [-], 15.08 [kW]; b) 2560.00 [rev/min], 640.00 [rev/min].
