V. A. Introduction “Today we will be focusing more on our unit on folktales.”

The teacher will review the vocabulary terms by using the picture
cards to help the students visualize the meaning of the word. The
students will be asked to define the term using their own words.

Disbelief: to not believe something.

Dismay: to feel upset because of shock or surprise.
Fabulous: Something that is amazing.
Features: things that are noticeable about something.
Unique: the only one of its kind.
Watchful: to be watching closely and carefully.

The teacher will discuss the unit genre with the students and
explain what a Folktale is and its key features using the anchor
chart as a reference.
A folktale:
-Often reflects on a common theme/lesson
-May have characters that are animals that talk and act as people
do.
-Have been told for many years, passed down through
generations.

B. Procedures The students will listen to the shared read again all the way
through without stopping to answer questions. The teacher will
have the students focus on the main theme of the text and think
about character development throughout the story.

After the story the teacher will have the students work on a
problem solution activity in their workbook. The teacher will
have the students break up into groups to discuss the different
problems and solutions throughout the story. They will fill out
the grid using textual evidence found throughout the story.

**Before the students break into groups the teacher will discuss
what problems and solutions are when reading text. She will also
lead an example of how to fill out the problem/solution grid.

After all groups have completed their problem/solution grids they

will discuss as a class the main problem of the story, the step
taken throughout the story, and then the final solution of the
story.

The teacher will also discuss with the students how this story fits
under the folktale category.

C. Differentiation Process: The story is read aloud to the students as they read
silently along.
Product: The students participate in small group and whole group
discussion to extend on what they are learning during the lesson.
D. Closure “Today we broke apart our story and discussed its different
features.”
T: Can anyone tell me one of the aspects of a folktale?

“As we continue to focus on this story this week, think of how

unique characteristics made the characters special to the story.”

VI. Assessment The students will be informally assessed by the teacher through
