You wil hear a man call Alex telephoning to enquire about gliding school
lessons.
R: Good morning, Zest Gliding Club.
A: Oh, hello. I’m interested in booking a beginner gliding lesson for my wife. I’d
like to ask a couple of questions.
R: Of course, how can I help?
A: Well, could you explain what happens in the lesson?
R: It’s 2 hours long and essentially what we do is start by giving a short talk to
explain basics and then you go up. It’s 2 seater plane with the teacher behind you
and you’re control. So, the learner actually flies on her own for part of the time,
though of course the instructor takes off and lands.
A: Yes, but I’m amazed that you go straight up in the plane without trying it out
beforehand, on the machine, eventhough it’s with an instructor.
R: We have very experienced teachers and it’s very safe.
A: Ok, that’s helped a lots but I do have a couple of worries
R: If it’s about the weather, I need to tell you that good are especially important
for the first lesson, so if it’s windy or pouring with rain, we let you rearrange it
and come back on another day.
A: That’s fine and I read that on your website, very sensible. And it’s not
problem because we don’t live far from the club. I did want to ask, I understand
that you offer different types of flight?  1.A which type of flight will be the
most comfortable
R: Yes, we offer a faster flight and a slower, less adventurous version.
A: I know Rosie will prefer gentle experience for the first time. Thanks.
R: Yes.
A: And another thing, I want to find out your membership we’ve recently moved
into the area and if things work out, we’d be both be interested in joining the
club.
R: We have 140 on our books at the moment, from all walks of life. Because
gliding usually an all day commiment people often think of it as an older
person’s hobby for retired people with time on their hands. But most of our
members are middle aged. But we’re trying hard to get under 25 involve and it’s
the biggest growth area, though it still about 10% of the membership, it’s on the
rise.  2.C under 25-years-olds
A: Sounds a good mix. My wife and I have always wanted to try gliding, it must
be an amazing feeling
R: Well, I’ve been gliding for over 10 years and I have to say each time I go up I
learn something new about the sport. It’s not really about the thrill of being so
far above the ground, for me the great thing is silence and freedom from stress.
3.A the sense of peacefulness
A: Sounds maverlous.

A: So, if I may, I would like to go ahead and make the booking.

R: Great, Uh, Just take a few details. It’s for your wife, you say?
A: Yes, that’s correct.
R: So I’ll start by getting her name.
A: It’s Rosie Faulkner
R: How do you spell that?
A: 4. FAULKNER
R: Thanks, I’ve got that. Now, her date of birth, I presume she’s over 18.
A: She’s 46. Her birthday is 5. 25th August, 1970
R: Lovely, thanks. Now, I hope you don’t mind but I need to get a bit more
information about your wife so we could make appropriate preparations. How tall
is she?
A: She is 1 metre 72 centimetres  6. 1.72m
R: Just writing that down. Lovely, thanks. And does she have any medical
conditions which would be helpful to know about for example problems with her
ears or her back?
A: The main thing is her neck. 7. neck She had injury 12 months ago, it’s pretty
much …
R: Certainly worth mentioning, I’ll put down on the form. Thanks. And a contact
number?
A: Just get that, Ok, it’s 0775342136
R: And you mentioned it was a special event. Now, we have different kinds of
package, for example we have gold package which includes flowers and dinner in
a restaurant after the flight or we have we call the regular
A: Ah, go for the latter one, please. My wife is someone who likes things simple.
 8. The Regular
R: Of course, quite understand.
A: Yes
R: And what address should I send the voucher to?
A: It’s Northbrook house, 9. bank road, in Sandbrook, the postcode’s BL2 4PD
R: And do you have a date in mind for the lesson?
A: Well, it would be great if we could have the 25th of August
R: Just checking with diary, yes, that’s possible
A: Great
R: We can offer either 10am or 3pm
A: Oh, the afternoon, please. So she could have a lie in.
R: Lovely, I’ll put it down for 3 o’clock. And one final thing we’d like to know for
ou record is how you found out about the club? For example, was it from your
friend?
A: Oh no, let me think, it was on radio 10. radio someone talking about the
beginner lessons.
