DIYA POSTER ANALYSIS

The following is a political poster calling to the public to vote conservative by placing a dreadful
scene in the eyes of the voters if they vote otherwise. The poster uses name-calling and fear appeal
to make a point and speak to the audience. Moreover, satire is used to describe the public’s
situation if they are to choose socialism.

The poster has used name-calling and satire to highlight the disadvantage of choosing socialism and
have chosen cartoon to do so. The cartoon depicts an Englishman’s home surrounded by officers
with long noses. The long noses show the nosy nature of the socialists and how they can not mind
their own business and probably going to disrupt their personal space. Furthermore, a wealthy
English household is used to depict how even the richest of people will be prey to this intervention.

Later in the poster, fear appeal and hyperbole are used to encourage people to choose
conservatism. The sentence “If you want to call your soul your own, VOTE CONSERVATIVE” instils
fear in the people of how they are going to end up as robots under socialism with the people in
power controlling every aspect of their life. Taking away of the soul is used to add effect to the
statement.

The words ‘socialism’ and ‘vote conservative’ are in big, bold letters to give the spotlight to the
purpose of the poster at first glance. Red, a colour associated with danger is used for the word
‘socialism’ to suggest that socialism is the wrong choice while the colour blue is used for the words
‘vote conservative’ as blue is usually used to show serenity, stability, reliability.

To conclude, the poster provides a strong negative image of socialism to the voters in the form of
both text and cartoon.
