Do you agree that the use of social media deteriorates workplace culture?

Social media refers to electronic devices to communicate, entertain, spread thought

to connect people by the Internet. Social media transform the phenomenon because it initiates

to substitute the traditional work style. Initially, social media was applied to contact our

relatives or friends who lived far from us. Afterwards, it begins used by businesses to contact

clients as well as employers assign work to employees. (Dollarhide, 2021) Since that, social

media has increased the working efficiency between employer and employee. However,

social media has also resulted from inconveniences to the employee that they lost personal

privacy space. They will be afraid to receive working messages during their free time. The

use of social media indeed deteriorates workplace culture because employees may make a

negative image and can cause hacking, even though some argue that social media can build

stronger relationships. (Kanchwala, 2015)

Firstly, I agree that the use of social media deteriorates workplace culture because

employees may make negative events. (Kanchawala, 2015) The inappropriate posts and

communications will harm the company's reputation and brand image, as well as cause

scandal. This is the reason why the company will easily happen litigation and loss of benefits.

As a result, it is important to manage the company's image because nowadays social media

can spread messages rapidly, all the incidents that you did will be seen very soon. To prevent

scandal, a good way to show the company positive image is to always share interesting

content from company gatherings on social media to emphasize the company have a good

atmosphere to attract people to come to invest or have cooperation. However, the employees

must pay attention to the image they create on social media. For instance, employees should

not upload content photos or videos that contain insults, drunks, sexual etc. This will show

the company's unprofessionalism and irresponsibility, as well as cause customers, to lose

trust in the company and terminate cooperation as soon as possible. (Lovering, 2019)

Secondly, I agree that the use of social media deteriorates workplace culture

because it can cause hacking. (Kanchawala, 2015) Some firms may leak valuable and secret

information through social media regarding unpublished services or products but without

doing appropriate confidential, thus the hacker catches up the opportunity to sell the detail to

their competitor. Furthermore, there is some employee access information with usernames

and passwords in company systems but forget to log out, hence it lets some hackers chance

made to perpetrate crimes, as well as spread misleading information that is harmful to the

company. Besides, there are always have hidden viruses in social media, such as pop-up

adverts or unknown apps, if click, the hacker can harm your company's equipment and

networks. Moreover, viruses and malware that hackers create can also cause the corruption of

important work-related files, putting the firm in danger of data and identity theft.

Additionally, some companies like to set simple passwords for convenient access to business

information also provide a chance for hackers to access it easily. (Beall, 2017)

However, some argue that the use of social media does not deteriorate workplace

culture because social media can build stronger relationships. (Kanchawala, 2015) People

may now connect more easily due to social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter,

WhatsApp, Instagram, and other software. We can now tailor our presence on the internet

and communicate with a greater group of people. Social networking is an excellent method of

bringing your team together. It can be used for contact, cooperation, and conference. For

example, it can be transparent communication. It allows for multiple communication between

the company and the employee, which is quick, clearer, and more personal than traditional

communication methods. Employees can always use social media to share information and

ideas, learn from one other's experiences, and expand their understanding by participating in

cross-domain discussions. (Rossi, 2015) In addition to this, using social media to

communicate with co-workers improves and builds personal relationships. Co-workers can

utilise social media to communicate with one another and strengthen their connections.

Employee connections are a deeper product in more rapprochement and active work teams.

Social media is the easiest approach to encourage workers to communicate with each other,

exchange understanding and increase productivity at home and work. Additionally,

employees can use social media to ask problems and solve job problems. Posing a question

on social media is a quick and easy method to receive lots of answers. Even if none of the

answers is used to address fix the problem, the info they provide may suggest a different

approach. When you need a fresh perspective, social networking is a great way to get several

new perspectives fast, conveniently, and with no need to pay any payment. (Jeanetta, 2017)

However, that is a weak argument because social media causes harassment to

happen easier. For instance, the previous working partner insults you and your company on

social media after the bad cooperation, always spreading bad comments on social media.

(Morrison, 2021) This harassment not only damages your psychology, and affect your

company reputation which can cause bankruptcy in the future if seriously. This is not just

simple harassment, it is more like a crime that looks legal. Additionally, some senior

employees have bad relationships with other junior colleagues which may cause

cyberbullying. For example, the seniors use anonymous methods to threaten the junior on

social media such as death threats, insult threats, which will cause suicide cases to happen.

Furthermore, some owners will do sexting to their employee who is female to do the

harassment. Hence, social media indeed deteriorates workplace culture.

In conclusion, I agree that the use of social media deteriorates workplace culture

because employees may make negative images and can cause hacking. However, some argue

that social media doesn't deteriorate workplace culture because it can build stronger

relationships. It is recommended that the employer can have a private conversation with the

negative commenter to solve the issue. (Baird, 2014) About the hacking problem, choose a

suitable platform such as Telegram, which provides users with a secure function to have a

secret business chat and the option of self-destruction after the conversation is ended. (Bubna,

2020) However, there are a few weaknesses in this recommendation because not everyone

would like to confront the negative events that they have done and solve them. Secondly,

although Telegram has the function of protecting user privacy, it can't control the user to

show it to the person who is next to them physically. (1072 words)
