My name is Tom Jones. My friends call me Tom. I am from Melbourne. I am Australian. I
am a student of English Department at the University of Melbourne. Everyday I go to my campus
at Swanston Street. I have a lot of friends. They are nice and friendly. Alice is my classmate. We
sometimes study together at the library. The library has thousands of books. Prof. Miller is one of
our lecturers. He teaches English History and Literature.
The University of Melbourne is an international university. It is one of the oldest
universities in Australia. People from other countries come to Melbourne to study in this
university. They come from Europe, Asia, America and Africa. I have friends from different
countries. I learn their cultures and traditions. When I graduate, I want to go visiting other
countries and meet different people.

Reading 2
Elizabeth was a very pretty girl, and her parents were rich. A lot of young men in the
town wanted to marry her, but she was not satisfied with any of them. One evening, one of the
handsomest of the young men who wanted to marry Elizabeth came to visit her in her parents’
house and asked her to become his wife.
“No, William. I won’t marry you. I want to marry a man who is famous, who can play
music, sing and dance very well, who can tell really interesting stories, who does not smoke or
drink, who stays at home in the evenings and he stops talking when I’m tired of listening,”she
answered.
The young man got up, took his coat and went to the door, but before he left the house,
he turned and said to Elizabeth, “It isn’t a man you’re looking for. It’s a television set.”

Reading 3
It was Thursday evening. All family members were at my parents’ house. My parents
invited my uncle, my sister, my brother, and me for their twenty-fifth anniversary of their
marriage. Everyone was busy to prepare the family party.
Suddenly the rain poured heavily and a few minutes later the light was off. When the
light was off, my brother was roasting lamb, my sister was putting all the plates, spoons, forks,
and was preparing the table with food and I was helping my mother decorate the cake and
candles.
Fortunately, my uncle called and when I told him what was happening, he said he would
come with emergency lights. In the dark, my father looked for other candles and lit some of them.
When my uncle arrived, we were still setting up the table. He turned the emergency lights on.
Under the dim light, we were ready to sit around the table full of food. My father lit the candle
and together with my mother they blew out the candle and we clapped, sang, and pray for their
health and happiness. Then we started to enjoy the food. While we were having the food, the
light was on again. We cheered and clapped once again.
