End-of-Unit 2 Assessment: Revising a Book Review and

Participating in a Text-Based Discussion

(For Teacher Reference)

This two-part assessment centers on CCSS ELA RL.3.1, W.3.1c, W.3.5, SL.3.1,
L.3.2e, L.3.2f, L.3.2g, and L.3.3b. In Part I, students orally support an opinion
based on evidence from the text when discussing whether they would recommend
Peter Pan to a friend. In Part II, students use teacher feedback to revise their book
reviews for spelling and linking words and phrases.

CCSS Addressed:

 RL.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text,

referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

 W.3.1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with
reasons.

 W.3.1c: Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for
example) to connect opinion and reasons.

 W.3.5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and
strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing.

 SL.3.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one,

in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts,
building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

 SL.3.1a: Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required

material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about
the topic to explore ideas under discussion.

 SL.3.1b: Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in
respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the
topics and texts under discussion).

 SL.3.1c: Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay

on topic, and link their comments to the remarks of others.

writing words.

 L.3.2g: Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed

to check and correct spellings.

 L.3.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking,

Collaborative Discussion

Throughout this module, you have been reading and analyzing Peter Pan by J.M.
Barrie. For this assessment, you are going to consider both what you enjoyed
about the novel and what you would like to change in order to make a
recommendation. (RL.3.1, SL.3.1a, SL.3.1b, SL.3.1c, SL.3.1d, L.3.3b)

In this part of the assessment, you will meet with a small group to discuss the
follow question:

Would you recommend Peter Pan to a friend? Why/why not?

Remember to use details and examples from the text to support and explain your
thinking.

Throughout the discussion, refer to:

 the Discussion Norms anchor chart

 the notes on your Text-Based Discussion: Peter Pan note-catcher

 the goal you set on your Discussion Notes handout from the previous lesson

Record any questions or notes on your Discussion Notes: Assessment.

After the assessment, your teacher will invite you to reflect on your learning from
the discussion and to record your reflections in the “My learning about the text

piece

 correcting all spelling errors circled by your teacher

You may use a dictionary, your texts, and any other resources available in class to
help you revise and edit.

Now, begin work on revising and editing your first draft. Manage your time
carefully so that you can:

1. Reread your first draft.

2. Reread teacher feedback.

3. Revise your first draft to incorporate teacher feedback.

4. As you revise, highlight the changes you make in yellow.
